Savoring the Caribbean: A Culinary Adventure in Mahahual
When the waves of Mahahual called, I answered with a culinary twist. Trading my surfboard for a spatula, I embarked on a flavorful journey at a beachfront cafe, mastering the art of Al Pastor with the Caribbean Sea as my backdrop. Here’s how it went.
A Warm Welcome to Mahahual
As soon as I stepped off the ship in Mahahual, I felt the familiar embrace of the Caribbean breeze. This time, my adventure wasn’t about catching the perfect wave but diving into the culinary depths of Mexican cuisine. I hailed a cab from the port, a mere $5 per person, and within minutes, I found myself at the charming Beachfront Cafe nestled on the boardwalk.
Colleen, a delightful host from Nova Scotia, greeted me with a warm smile and a refreshing drink. Her perfect English and welcoming demeanor set the tone for the day. The cafe was spotless, and even the bathrooms were pristine—a detail that always earns extra points in my book. I was thrilled to find Mountain Dew on the menu, a rare treat in these parts.
Mastering the Art of Al Pastor
The cooking class was led by Claudia and Liz, two passionate culinary experts who made the experience both educational and entertaining. We started with the basics—preparing fresh salsa and guacamole. The ingredients were vibrant and fresh, with the pineapple, onion, tomatoes, avocado, and cilantro bursting with flavor.
Next, we moved on to the main event: pork al pastor on a skewer, accompanied by onion and pineapple. The aroma of the marinated pork sizzling on the comal was intoxicating. Claudia shared her secret for a spicy hot sauce, which added an extra kick to the dish. For those who preferred, there was also a chicken option available.
The highlight for me was learning to make homemade tortillas. There’s something incredibly satisfying about pressing the dough and watching it puff up on the grill. We were even given a recipe to take home, along with a little box of Achiote paste—a thoughtful touch that extended the experience beyond the day.
A Day of Cultural Immersion
After indulging in the feast we had prepared, I took a moment to appreciate the setting. The turquoise waters of the Caribbean served as a stunning backdrop to our culinary adventure. The cafe’s location on the Malecon made it easy to explore the local shops and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk.
Supporting a local, woman-owned business added a layer of fulfillment to the day. Colleen and her team were attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed, from mocktails to soda, all included in the ticket price. Their love for dogs was evident, as they mentioned feeding leftover meat to the local strays—a heartwarming gesture.
With plenty of time left before heading back to the ship, I wandered through the vibrant streets, politely declining the offers from local vendors. The experience was a perfect blend of cultural immersion and relaxation, leaving me with a full belly and a happy heart. If you find yourself in Mahahual, I can’t recommend this cooking class enough. It’s a delicious way to connect with the local culture and savor the flavors of the Caribbean.
