- Maktaris - Mactaris is an archaeological site of Numidian origin situated on a plateau at the northern edge of the Tunisian ridge, marking the boundary between the North-West and Center-West of Tunisia. It was once among the wealthiest regions of Tunisia. The preserved stelae in the site’s museum and the dense megalithic tombs and monuments, still standing today, highlight the ancient occupation and significance of the area. The city played a commercial role that extended beyond the local framework, thanks to its prime location in the geometric center of Tunisia and at the watershed point between two slopes, allowing it to control the region’s most crucial passages. Human settlement in the region is ancient, with over 2800 years of occupation evidenced by the megaliths found throughout the site. The city of Makthar was established in the 4th century BC by the Numidian kings.
- Kasra - Kesra is the highest village in Tunisia, perched at 1100 meters above sea level, and is considered one of the earliest Berber villages. As a cradle of Berber, Punic, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic civilizations, Kesra remains a mythical city clinging to a rocky hill in the center-west of the country, 175 km from Tunis and 20 km from Makhtar. In this village, where past and present intertwine, the lives of the inhabitants, who are quite conservative, revolve around ancient and ancestral traditions and social practices. A natural fortress with its strategic elevated position dominating the surrounding plains and natural water sources, Kesra offers breathtaking panoramas over fields and wild landscapes. The complete absence of pollution invites visitors to travel and provides a true oxygenation cure, a real sanatorium as the legend of Kesra suggests.
