Nostalgic Roads: From Surabaya to the Peaks of Bromo and Ijen
When the call of the open road beckoned, I found myself drawn to the enchanting landscapes of Indonesia. Join me as I recount my journey from Surabaya to the majestic peaks of Mount Bromo and Ijen, where nostalgia and adventure intertwined.
A Journey Through Time: From Surabaya to the Majestic Peaks
As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips, the allure of the open road has always been irresistible to me. This time, my wanderlust led me to the enchanting landscapes of Indonesia, where I embarked on a journey from Surabaya to the majestic peaks of Mount Bromo and Ijen. The trip promised not only breathtaking vistas but also a nostalgic reminder of the road trips I cherished in my youth.
Our adventure began in Surabaya, where we were greeted by our guide, Ubay. His warm smile and punctuality set the tone for the days ahead. As we settled into the comfortable van, I couldn’t help but reminisce about the countless road trips I took across America with my family. The anticipation of the journey, the camaraderie, and the promise of new experiences were all too familiar.
Our first destination was the Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. The drive through the lush countryside was a feast for the eyes, reminiscent of the scenic routes I often explored back home. Upon arrival, a local guide took us under his wing, ensuring our belongings were safe and capturing our moments with professional photos. The waterfall, with its cascading beauty, was a sight to behold, and the opportunity to change into dry clothes afterward was a thoughtful touch.
The Mystical Ascent: Ijen Crater
After a restful night at a hotel near the Ijen Crater, we embarked on a night transfer to the crater itself. The journey was reminiscent of the midnight drives I used to take, where the world seemed to pause, and the road was ours alone. Equipped with face masks, glasses, and trekking poles, we began our ascent.
The climb was challenging yet invigorating, much like the hikes I used to take in the Appalachian Mountains. As we reached the crater, the sight of the blue flames dancing in the darkness was nothing short of magical. It was a reminder of nature’s wonders, much like the starry skies I often admired during my road trips.
The descent was equally memorable, and after a refreshing shower and breakfast at the hotel, we were ready for the next leg of our journey. The transfer to Mount Bromo was smooth, and the hotel nestled in the embrace of green mountains offered a serene retreat.
Sunrise Over Mount Bromo: A View to Remember
The final chapter of our adventure took us to Mount Bromo. The night transfer by off-road vehicle was an experience in itself, reminiscent of the rugged terrains I navigated in my RV. As we reached the viewpoint, the anticipation of witnessing the sunrise was palpable.
Though the clouds played spoilsport, Ubay, ever the resourceful guide, led us to a beautiful viewpoint that offered a different perspective. It was a reminder that sometimes, the journey is just as rewarding as the destination.
As our trip came to a close, I reflected on the experiences that had unfolded over the past few days. The landscapes, the camaraderie, and the sense of adventure had rekindled my love for the open road. As we were dropped off at the airport in Surabaya, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the memories we had created and the stories we would carry with us.
This journey was more than just a trip; it was a reminder of the beauty that lies in exploration and the joy of discovering new horizons. Until the next adventure, the road awaits.
