Chasing Horizons: A Day in Cinque Terre and Pisa
When the call of the Italian coast beckoned, I couldn’t resist the allure of a day trip to Cinque Terre and Pisa. With the promise of picturesque villages and breathtaking views, I set off on an adventure that would leave me longing for more.
A Morning in Manarola
The day began with a sense of anticipation as we set off from Florence in a cozy van, the sun just beginning to peek over the horizon. Our guide, Emilio, was a character in his own right—knowledgeable, respectful, and with a sense of humor that kept us entertained throughout the journey. As we drove through the rolling hills of Tuscany, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of freedom, reminiscent of the open ocean waves I often ride back home.
Our first stop was Manarola, a picturesque village that seemed to have leapt straight out of a postcard. The narrow streets were lined with colorful houses, each one more charming than the last. We had the village almost to ourselves, a rare treat that allowed us to soak in the beauty without the usual throngs of tourists. I took a moment to enjoy a leisurely breakfast, savoring the local pastries and coffee while watching the village slowly come to life.
Exploring Vernazza
After a short ferry ride, we arrived in Vernazza, a village that seemed to be bustling with life. The harbor was filled with boats bobbing gently on the water, and the air was filled with the scent of the sea. Despite the crowds, there was a certain magic to Vernazza that was undeniable. We hiked up to the castle ruins, where the view from the overlook was nothing short of breathtaking. The azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea stretched out before us, a sight that reminded me of the endless horizons I chase on my surfboard.
Lunch was a delightful affair at Trattoria La Grotta, where I was introduced to the wonders of eggplant parmigiana. As someone who usually steers clear of eggplant, I was pleasantly surprised by the rich flavors and textures. It was a meal that lingered in my memory long after we left the restaurant.
Riomaggiore and the Leaning Tower
Our journey continued to Riomaggiore, where we had the chance to explore the village and take a refreshing dip in the sea. The pebble beach was a welcome sight, and I couldn’t resist the call of the water. Swimming in the cool, clear sea was invigorating, a reminder of the simple joys that life by the ocean brings.
The final leg of our trip took us to Pisa, where the famous Leaning Tower awaited. While the structures were undeniably beautiful, the area was crowded with tourists, and the commercial atmosphere was a bit overwhelming. It was a stark contrast to the serene beauty of the Cinque Terre villages.
As we made our way back to Florence, I reflected on the day’s adventures. The Cinque Terre had captured my heart, and I knew I would return for a longer visit. The day had been a perfect blend of exploration, relaxation, and new friendships—a reminder of why I love to travel and share these experiences with you all. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend this day trip for a taste of the Italian coast’s magic.
