In the early morning hours (around midnight), the ascent to the summit begins. This is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the trek. The wind and cold at this altitude and time can be intense. The climb is done in darkness for several hours with frequent, short breaks. At Gilman’s Point (18,600 ft), a breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak awaits. Finally, Uhuru Peak is reached - the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.
After a brief moment to admire the African plains and celebrate the achievement, the descent to Horombo Hut begins. In the evening, a final dinner on the mountain is enjoyed, followed by a well-deserved rest.
