This national wildlife refuge is a sanctuary for alligators, bears, the extremely rare and endangered red wolf, and a wide variety of unique birds that inhabit the inner banks. Although alligators are generally shy, they can be observed in certain canals or larger waterways within the refuge. With Outer Banks Kayak Adventures, skilled kayak guides will lead you on an unforgettable expedition, searching for these ancient creatures. It’s common to spot them either swimming in the water or basking along the shoreline.
  The Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is an expansive haven that hosts a diverse collection of over 250 bird species. During the Alligator River kayak tours, participants will often encounter beautiful birds such as Prothonotary Warblers, Wood Ducks, Northern Cardinals, Killdeer, and Pileated Woodpeckers.

Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge offers a habitat for more than 300 diverse species. During the kayak tours, participants have the opportunity to observe a variety of birds, including Prothonotary Warblers, Wood Ducks, Northern Cardinals, Killdeer, and Pileated Woodpeckers. It’s common to see an alligator swimming in the distance or basking on the shore. The refuge also hosts the largest population of black bears on the East Coast. Black bears are occasionally seen wandering, resting on the ground, or climbing trees.
