RONGAI SIMBA CAMP (FULL BOARD).
Mount Kilimanjaro - Travel to Marangu to complete registration formalities, then transfer by SUV to Rongai. The climb starts from Nale Moru (6,400 ft) on a small path winding through maize and potato fields before entering a pine forest. The trail then climbs steadily, yet gently, through a beautiful forest that is home to various wildlife, including the Colobus monkey. These monkeys are black with a long white ‘cape’ of hair and a flowing white tail. The forest begins to thin at the moorland zone’s edge. Enjoy expansive views over the Kenyan plains as you reach the first campsite at Rongai One Camp (8,500 ft). [3-4 hours walking]
RONGAI SECOND CAVE (FULL BOARD).
Mount Kilimanjaro - The morning walk is a steady ascent to the Second Cave (11,300 ft) with excellent views of Kibo and the Eastern Icefields on the crater rim. After lunch, leave the main trail and head southeast across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The campsite is in a sheltered valley, adorned with giant senecios near Kikelewa Caves (11,800 ft). [6-7 hours walking]
RONGAI KIKELELWA CAVE (FULL BOARD).
Mount Kilimanjaro - A short but steep climb offers superb all-around views and a strong sense of wilderness. Vegetation is left behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn (14,200 ft), spectacularly located in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon is free to rest or explore the surrounding area to aid acclimatization. [3-4 hours walking]
MAWENZI TARN (FULL BOARD).
Mount Kilimanjaro - An additional day is available for acclimatization. Explore the area with a walk up onto the Saddle towards Camel’s Back, then return to camp at Mawenzi Tarn (14,200 ft). [2-3 hours walking]
MAWENZI TARN TO KIBO HUT (FULL BOARD).
Mount Kilimanjaro - Cross the lunar desert of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut (15,400 ft) at the base of the crater wall. The rest of the day is spent resting in preparation for an early morning final ascent. [5-6 hours walking]
KIBO HUT TO SUMMIT TO HORROMBO HUT (FULL BOARD).
Mount Kilimanjaro - Begin the final and most challenging part of the climb by torchlight around 1 a.m. Progress slowly in the darkness on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gillman’s Point (18,600 ft). Rest briefly to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi. Those feeling strong can make the three-hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (19,345 ft), passing close to the stunning glaciers and ice cliffs that still cover much of the summit area. The descent to Kibo Hut (15,400 ft) is surprisingly quick, and after refreshments, continue descending to Horombo Huts (12,200 ft). [11-15 hours walking]
HORROMBO HUT (FULL BOARD).
Mount Kilimanjaro - A steady descent leads down through moorland to Mandara Huts (8,900 ft). Continue descending through lush forest on a good path to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Marangu (6,000 ft), where a transfer will take you back to Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort in Marangu. [5-6 hours walking]
Dinner and overnight stay at Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort: Bed, Dinner, and Breakfast included.
DEPARTURE DAY:
Marangu Falls - After bidding farewell to the team of guides, a private departure transfer is included from Marangu to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight, unless you choose to have a short safari or another option to discuss.

The 7-DAY RONGAI JOURNEY begins at the secluded northern part of Kilimanjaro, close to the border of Kenya. We traverse through an untouched wilderness area heading towards the sharp Mawenzi Peak, next crossing a desolate desert saddle before ascending Kibo’s eastern crater wall.
The Rongai journey presents a more gradual climb, which makes it the preferred choice for those with little or no experience in backpacking. Nonetheless, it still offers an enjoyable trek for the most seasoned hikers. As stated earlier, an extra day for getting acclimatized is included on Day 5.
On this day, we undertake extra acclimatization hikes around and onto the saddle towards Camel’s Back.
