The Maratea tour starts at the town’s highest point: Mount San Biagio. Here, visitors can marvel at the impressive Statue of Christ the Redeemer, a significant emblem of both the city and the Basilicata region.
This statue is the second largest of its kind globally, following the one in Rio de Janeiro. It stands 21 meters tall, with an arm span of 19 meters and a face measuring 3 meters. Constructed from reinforced concrete and covered with white cement and Carrara marble, it was crafted by artist Bruno Innocenti in 1965, offering breathtaking views of the sea and mountains.
After appreciating the statue, the tour proceeds to the nearby Basilica of St. Biagio, dedicated to the town’s patron saint. Inside, visitors can admire its most notable artwork, a fresco of the Madonna and Child.
The journey then continues through the medieval village of Maratea, featuring ancient houses with arches, narrow alleys, and picturesque streets that lead to small squares paved with local stone, creating a captivating atmosphere.
