North Cascades National Park - The journey to Winthrop begins in Bellingham, traveling east on State Route 20 through the Cascade Mountain Range. Known as “The most beautiful highway in Washington,” this route offers stunning views of waterfalls, lakes, and the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project, which supplies some of Seattle’s electricity.
Skagit River - Following part of our eastern route, the Skagit River was first documented in 1859 by Henry Custer, an American topographer for the US Boundary Commission. Indigenous peoples have inhabited the Skagit area for millennia. Archaeological findings suggest that the ancestors of the Upper Skagit tribe resided in what is now Ross Lake National Recreation Area at least 8,000 years ago. Today, the river is a favored spot for whitewater rafting and fly fishing.
Newhalem Visitor Center - Newhalem is a company town owned by Seattle City Light, home to permanent residents and employees of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project.

In summer, the lake’s unique turquoise hue is due to fine rock particles suspended in the water, refracting sunlight. This vibrant color is most pronounced on sunny days in July, August, and September during the seasonal glacial melt.
