Setting Sail on Elba Island

The allure of the Tuscan Archipelago had been calling to me for quite some time, and the opportunity to explore it by sea kayak was irresistible. As a marine biologist, the chance to glide over the waters of Elba Island, with its rich marine life and stunning coastal landscapes, was a dream come true. I arrived at Marciana Marina, eager to embark on this adventure, and was greeted by Alice and Giuseppe, our guides for the excursion. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and I knew I was in for an unforgettable experience.

Our journey began with a paddle towards Capo d’Enfola. The weather was perfect, the sun casting a golden glow over the turquoise waters. As we paddled, dolphins danced on the horizon, a sight that never fails to take my breath away. The gentle rhythm of the kayak cutting through the water was both calming and exhilarating, a perfect blend of serenity and adventure. Giuseppe, with his wealth of knowledge and experience, ensured that we were well-prepared for the journey ahead, making us feel safe and confident in our abilities.

Navigating the Storm

The following day brought a change in weather, with a storm sweeping across the island. While some might see this as a setback, for us, it was an opportunity for adventure. Once the storm subsided, we embarked on a two-day excursion to the East coast. The waves were lively, adding a touch of adrenaline to our journey. Our small group bonded over the shared thrill of the adventure, and the overnight stay on a secluded beach was nothing short of magical. We feasted on delicious local cuisine, paired with exquisite Tuscan wine, under a canopy of stars. It was moments like these that reminded me why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place.

Serene Beauty of Sant’Andrea

As the week drew to a close, we set out for Sant’Andrea, a place renowned for its serene beauty. The crowds of high season had long departed, leaving us to enjoy the tranquil surroundings in peace. The beach, with its light grey granite sand and crystal-clear waters, was a perfect spot for reflection and relaxation.

The final day was spent honing our skills in the port, a fitting end to a week of learning and exploration. The carbon kayaks we used were a delight, light and responsive, making every paddle stroke a joy. Giuseppe’s guidance throughout the week had been invaluable, and I left Elba Island with a newfound appreciation for the art of sea kayaking.
