- Cascata delle Marmore - In 1817, the English poet George Byron visited the Marmore Falls and described them as “horribly beautiful.” These falls, both intimidating and awe-inspiring, embody the romantic notion of sublime beauty. Alongside Byron, artists like Goethe and Corot emphasized the striking view of the River Velino as it cascades towards the River Nera.
It is noteworthy that, despite their breathtaking beauty, the Marmore Falls are largely man-made. This transformation began in 271 BC when the Roman consul Manio Curio Dentato directed the stagnant waters near Rieti to flow into the River Nera. Since then, the falls have formed three large cascades that descend 165 meters, making them the tallest falls in Europe.
Visitors can explore the various streams from the falls using well-marked paths of varying difficulty levels, providing a “horribly beautiful” experience, just as Lord Byron described.
- Museo delle Mummie di Ferentillo - The Nera River divides the quaint village of Ferentillo into two sections. The Precetto area, on the left bank of the river, is renowned for the Museum of the Mummies of Ferentillo. The museum’s “macabre” title prompts curiosity about the presence of mummies in southern Umbria. In reality, the people in Precetto had a tradition of burying their deceased in underground chambers of the local church. This practice continued until the early 19th century when a decree during the Napoleonic era mandated the removal of bodies from the town. During this period, twenty-four bodies were exhumed that, unlike others, had retained their organic features, such as hair, nails, and clothing. Some even displayed signs of stab wounds and other injuries. The preservation of the Ferentillo mummies is likely due to studies suggesting that the unique chemical composition of the soil in the crypt is rich in microorganisms and that there is good air circulation in the chambers.
