Inhabited since prehistoric times, it bears the marks of its residents, shaping the magnificent complex seen today. The Citadel is rich in buildings of architectural, military, and historical significance, and its open spaces host numerous rare species of flora and fauna. It is an ideal venue for quality events that bring history to life, connecting the island’s past with its future. Visiting Cittadella offers a chance to step back in time and experience history in an unforgettable way.
- Church of St. John The Baptist - The first stone was laid in 1951. The old church of St. John remained in use during construction and continued to serve until the new building was completed. Many donations and skilled craftsmen’s free labor contributed to the enormous structure’s rise, year by year, until after twenty years of hard work, the new church was ready.
Just before the Rotunda’s completion, the old church was carefully dismantled, and its best parts were delicately rebuilt next to the new church. Visitors can explore the remnants of the old church (now known as The Sculpture Museum) and admire the intricate lacework on some of the old Maltese stone.
From the Sculpture Museum, visitors can take a lift up to the Dome to enjoy spectacular views of the island of Gozo and even as far as Malta.
