Full Day Tour of Marrakech - Exploring the City
Medina - Marrakech holds a legendary status, embodying mystery, sensuality, and exoticism. Its influence and renown have been so significant in Morocco’s history that the country was named after the city. Marrakech is a lively city that offers a unique mix of ancient and modern, allowing visitors to experience the authentic medieval atmosphere of the old medina, and explore the trendiest bars, art galleries, and restaurants in the French Quarter, Guéliz, established in the early 20th Century, all in one day.
Koutoubia Mosque - Highlights of the visit include: The Koutoubia Mosque, constructed by the Almohads in the late 12th Century. The Koutoubia Mosque, particularly its minaret, is Marrakech’s most significant landmark and a symbol of the city. The minaret served as a model for the Giralda in Sevilla and the unfinished Tour Hassan in Rabat, all three designed by the same architect. Koutoubia means ‘booksellers’, as book trading was concentrated in the neighborhood during the Middle Ages. The minaret of the Koutoubia, standing 77 meters high, is visible from almost any point in the city – an old ordinance, still in effect, prohibits any building in Marrakech from exceeding the height of the Koutoubia minaret.
Saadian Tombs - Constructed in the 16th Century as mausoleums for some Saadian rulers and their families, the Saadian Tombs were unknown until discovered by the French in 1917 through aerial photographs. The site includes over one hundred graves, distributed in three mausoleums whose decoration exemplifies Islamic architecture with floral motifs, calligraphy, zellij, and Carrara marble, along with finely crafted cedar wood and stucco. Outside the buildings are a garden and the graves of soldiers and servants.
Bahia Palace - Built in the late 19th Century and adorned by Morocco’s finest artisans of the time, this palace – intended to be the most magnificent of its era – features an exquisite blend of Andalusian and Moorish styles. Particularly interesting are the harem apartments, the trapezoidal garden, and a vast tiled courtyard with fountains.
Jemaa el-Fnaa - Filling the alleys north of Djmaa el Fna is the souk, or traditional market – the largest in Morocco. It is subdivided into approximately 18 souks, each dedicated to a specific trade or craft – from spices or ironwork to the ingredients needed for casting magic spells. The number of shops – often no larger than a closet – is overwhelming, and in them, Moroccans can indulge in one of their favorite activities: bargaining. Cunning, patience, and a sense of humor are essential.
Drive to Ouarzazate Via Ait Ben Haddou
Ait Ben Haddou - After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, drive to Ait Benhaddou over the High Atlas Mountains, passing through the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, visit the Kasbah, and stop for lunch at a local restaurant. Then, head to Ouarzazate, stop near the Atlas Film Studios for photos, and continue driving to the city center for a spectacular view of the Kasbah of Taourirt. Proceed to Kalaa Mgouna for a relaxing night with dinner.
Kelaa M’gouna – Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Erg Chebbi
Merzouga - Morning drive towards Boumalne du Dades, a town in Tinghir, continue to Dades Valley to enjoy a glorious view and head to Todra Gorges via Imider. Along the way, be inspired by various wonderful sights. Upon reaching Todra Gorges, enjoy marvelous canyon views while hiking on foot. Then, the journey continues to Tinjedad for a lunch break, then to Erfoud to visit a local fossil craft workshop. Later, head to the captivating dunes of Erg Chebbi, also known as Merzouga Dunes, where you’ll prepare for a camel trek lasting an hour and a half, enjoying the sunset, followed by dinner and an overnight stay in a traditional luxury nomad tent in the middle of Merzouga dunes.
