- Marrakech - The driver-guide for your day trip will meet you at your hotel or riad at 8 a.m. (departure can be later if preferred). After a briefing on the day’s itinerary, you will set off in your comfortable vehicle towards the High Atlas Mountains. As you leave the city’s hustle and bustle, the scenery transitions from busy streets to expansive plains and the Atlas foothills.
The adventure begins on the road to Ouarzazate, renowned as one of Morocco’s most beautiful routes, offering breathtaking views as you ascend the mountains. During the journey, your guide will share insights about the Berber culture of the region and the history of the caravan routes, as well as the High Atlas as a natural barrier and cultural crossroads.
Your first photo stop will be at Ait Barka, a Berber village nestled in the mountain foothills. Here, you can enjoy a short walk, sip tea on a rooftop terrace with panoramic views, and take a moment to appreciate the scenery before continuing the ascent towards Tizi n’Tichka.
- Ait Barka - As the road from Marrakech descends into the Atlas foothills, the switchbacks begin. After about an hour, there is a convenient stop at Ait Barka, a small Berber village perfect for a brief pause before climbing the Tizi n‘Tichka pass.
It’s an excellent opportunity to relax and enjoy the mountain tranquility. Many travelers take a break on a rooftop, where traditional tea is served, offering panoramic views over the lush valleys and terraced agriculture. It’s a great chance to absorb the contrast between the rich green mountain foothills and the towering peaks beyond.
- Tizi n Tichka - After Ait Barka, the road steadily climbs into the High Atlas Mountains, reaching the highest point of any road in Morocco at 2,260 meters at the Tizi n‘Tichka Pass. This pass is famous for its majestic views of valleys, terraced fields, and dramatic peaks. Once a crucial route for caravans connecting Marrakech with the Sahara, it remains one of Morocco’s most scenic drives. You’ll stop here to admire the breathtaking views and capture photographs of the stunning panoramas. When the weather permits, snow-capped peaks stand out against the ochre mountains.
- Telouet Kasbah - Note: This visit to the kasbah is only available if the private option is selected.
Perched high in the High Atlas at 1,800 meters, the Kasbah Telouet was the former palace of the wealthy Glaoui family, hidden along the old trade route leading into the Sahara. The ruins are quite spectacular, and inside, the grandeur is still visible in the reception halls and rooms adorned with cedar wood ceilings painted with bold designs and plasterwork carved with traditional Moroccan motifs. From its roof, you can gaze across the valleys and mighty mountains, experiencing the mosque-like structure once inhabited by the rich and powerful. Visiting the Kasbah offers a rare glimpse into Morocco’s past and the Lords of the Atlas. Being just a few kilometers from the Berber souk of the Thursday market, there is much life to observe.
- Telouet - A visit to a traditional carpet cooperative in the Berber village ensures an authentic encounter with Berber life and a step into the country’s intangible heritage. In this workshop, you can learn about the ancestral Berber weaving techniques that have supported local families through challenging times and empowered rural women to sustain their communities.
During the visit, you will meet local women artisans who have achieved economic independence through this traditional craft. Experience how natural dyes and Berber symbols, stories, and natural elements are woven into each design, and meet the artisans who have chronicled them into the carpets. This stop supports fair trade, responsible tourism, and women’s empowerment. It will undoubtedly be much more than just a shopping stop!
- Ounila Valley - Note: Only if the private option is selected.
The journey from Telouet to Ait Ben Haddou takes you through the magnificent Ounila Valley, once part of the historic caravan route. The small Berber villages are nestled between the spectacular iron-colored mountains, with houses crafted from clay and stone in the same hues as the surrounding cliffs. The villages seem to blend seamlessly into the landscape, as if carved from the cliffs themselves. Terraced fields, orchards, and the remains of ancient kasbahs line the route, once patrolled by Berber guards. The views offer a pristine glimpse into traditional Berber life in the High Atlas, away from tourist hotspots, and are filled with photo opportunities.
- Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou - Upon reaching the famous Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the old ksar will loom against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. You will follow your guide through the narrow maze of alleyways and adobe structures of the historic village, listening to stories of Berber life. Many renowned Hollywood movies, such as Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, Lawrence of Arabia, and Jewel of the Nile, have been filmed here, making the village both a cinematic and cultural treasure.
- Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou - Lunch in a Local Restaurant (Details): There is an option to have lunch in a local restaurant. It offers a buffet of traditional Moroccan dishes, allowing you to savor Moroccan flavors and hospitality in a traditional setting. This is not included in the tour price and costs 130 Dhs per person.
- Ouarzazate - Visit Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate, one of the largest movie studios in the world, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco.” Explore famous film sets used in movies like Gladiator and The Mummy, and discover how the desert landscapes are transformed into cinematic worlds. This is a fascinating stop for movie enthusiasts and curious travelers.
- Marrakech - After exploring the beautiful Atlas Film Studios, you will begin your journey back to Marrakech. Relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery as you travel back through the Atlas Mountains. The journey concludes in Marrakech, where you will arrive in the late afternoon or early evening.
