Marrakech - The excursion begins with a morning departure from Marrakech, Agadir, or Ouarzazate, traveling by private vehicle to the village of Mhamid, situated at the desert’s edge. A stop is possible in an Atlas village, with a visit to Ait Ben Haddou near Ouarzazate. Ait Ben Haddou is a Ksar recognized as a UNESCO heritage site. In the evening, accommodations are arranged either with local residents in the village or in a comfortable fixed bivouac within the palm grove.
Hike to Sidi Naji
M’Hamid - The five-day desert adventure starts from M’hamid, a town at the Sahara’s entrance. Accompanied by the Desert Morocco Trek team and a camel caravan, the journey follows the Drâa wadi through M’hamid’s stunning palm grove. After several hours of walking, the bivouac is set up between the dunes, near the Sidi Naji sanctuary, where oral tradition says this Marabout lived 18 generations ago. This site is rich in local history and traditions.
Exploring the Zmaila region
M’Hamid - At dawn, camels are loaded before embarking on an exploration of Erg Zmila along the hamada. This location marks the far east of the Drâa valley. The walk is guided by the gray areas encountered along the way. The night is spent on the Zmila dunes, evoking a true sense of being “at the end of the world.”
Hike to Erg Zahar
M’Hamid - The journey continues southwest to Erg Ezahar, known as the “howling dunes” due to the gentle song created by the wind. These stunning sand dunes provide a breathtaking view of the entire Drâa Valley. This is a favorite spot! Rarely visited, it embodies the Sahara as imagined: lunar and undulating. Camp is set up at the dunes’ base, offering the choice to sleep under the stars or in a tent.
Erg Zaher Trip to the Ruins of Erg Samar
M’Hamid - Often, the fourth morning in the desert is when the magic unfolds. The bivouac is packed up, and the journey continues to Erg Smar, crossing Wadi Drâa. This stage offers a typical desert day experience, following the camels’ rhythm and allowing for unexpected and delightful encounters.
Return to Marrakech or next destination
Marrakech - An early morning departure from Erg Smar in a 4X4 leads to the fixed bivouac, followed by a return to Ouarzazate, Agadir, or Marrakech by evening’s end.
