From experience, we can say that exploring Essaouira by your own means is easy: the inhabitants are very friendly, the medina is quite small (compared to other ancient Moroccan cities) and its streets are in order. You certainly don’t need a guide to visit the city. If you insist on getting one, your driver will help you hire a local tour guide.
In Essaouira, you will visit the old Portuguese Casbah Secala, from there, explore the port and see the fishermen on the boats that sell fresh fish and seafood. After that, you will pass through the famous place Moulay el Hassan to enter the old medina, discover the narrow streets and visit many art galleries. Then, enjoy a fish lunch at a local restaurant or return to the port to pick up your fresh fish and cook it at a small local restaurant.
