Marrakech - Imlil Valley - Trek in the Atlas Mountains
Imlil - Depart from Marrakech by car around 8 AM for a 1 hour and 20-minute drive south through the Moulay Brahim Gorges. Visit the Asni weekly market, held every Saturday, before continuing to Agersioual (1,600m), located in the upper foothills of the Western High Atlas mountains. Here, leave the vehicle and meet your local guide to embark on a 12km trek eastward to the Berber village of Aikkiss (1,700m), crossing the Tizi n Agersioual pass (2,200m). Enjoy lunch in a Berber home or by the river, then continue walking up the Imnane Valley and over the Tizi n Tamter pass (2,779m). From this vantage point, you can see both the Imlil Valley and the Imnane Valley. A further 1 hour and 30-minute trek will bring you to the village of Imlil, where you will enjoy an evening meal in a delightful homestay. The journey includes a 1 hour and 20-minute drive and 6 hours of walking.
Trek to Toubkal Refuge
Toubkal - After breakfast, begin the trek along the Mizane Valley, first reaching the village of Aremd and then the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. Aremd, the largest village in the valley, is built on a moraine spur overlooking the valley floor and features traditional terraced farming, gites, and streets bustling with goats and cattle. The local Berber villagers have cultivated these lands for generations, growing corn, potatoes, and walnuts. Continuing east, cross the flood plain and follow mule tracks up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. After crossing the river, arrive at the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, a site that attracts both tourists and pilgrims (only Muslims may cross the stone bridge to visit the marabout shrine itself). The village, nestled beside a small waterfall, is a cluster of houses that blend into an anarchic mass. From here, the trail ascends steadily, winding up to the snowline and the Toubkal Refuge (3,206m), where you will spend the night. Approximately 5 hours of walking.
Trek to the Summit of Jebel Toubkal (4,165m) - Imlil - Marrakech
Toubkal - Early this morning, attempt the summit of Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in Northern Africa.
Imlil - The route ascends the south cirque, crossing the stream above the refuge and traversing one of the mountain’s many scree fields, where you will navigate a seemingly endless carpet of boulders and rocks. Although the walking is relatively straightforward, the scree and altitude present challenges, but the stunning views make the effort worthwhile. Upon reaching the ridgeline, you will find yourself on the plateau, from where it is a short walk to the summit. The panoramic views of the surrounding landscape are breathtaking, offering unobstructed vistas in every direction, from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north and as far south as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. Pliny, the renowned Roman scholar, once described the High Atlas Mountains as “the most fabulous mountains in all of Africa,” and from this high vantage point, it is easy to see why.
Marrakech - Retrace your steps down the mountain and return to Imlil before driving back to Marrakech.
