Marrakech / Cascade Ouzoud / Ait Bougmez
Cascades d’Ouzoud - After breakfast, the journey to Ouzoud begins. The route passes through the High Atlas mountains, reaching heights of up to 4200 meters. Here, waterfalls cascade over several levels, totaling 110 meters, flowing over red rocks into a small lake. The waterfall banks are adorned with fig trees and jungle-like lianas. A footpath leads to the top of the falls, and a steep path descends the right side. At the base, you can cross the river via a small ferry and return up the stairs. (lunch break on the edge)
Ait Bougmez Valley - Departing from Ouzoud, the journey continues into the mountains, showcasing beautiful terraced fields that are traditionally valued and enhanced. The Ait Bougmez valley in the High Atlas, known as the “Valley of the Happy,” is one of the most stunning valleys in the central High Atlas. It invites you to embark on exciting hikes to admire the valley’s diversity and mountain landscapes, and to meet Berber nomads.
- A local guide can be arranged to help you connect with village residents and understand the intricate Berber culture. You are also welcome to explore the area independently.
- Overnight stay in a charming Kasbah hotel, typical of Morocco’s south, with dinner and breakfast included.
- Ait Bougmez-Boutghrar - Skoura - Kelaat M’Gouna - Boumalen
Hotel Boutaghrar - Accommodation & Restaurant Valley of Roses - After a leisurely breakfast and exploring the surroundings, depart the Ait Bougmez valley and head to Boutghrar.
- Boutaghrar offers a landscape of lunar terrains with colors and geological forms creating a beautiful picture. This is an opportunity to observe the nomads up close, then continue to Skoura.
Skoura - Skoura is a predominantly Berber town with about 5,000 residents in the province of Ouarzazate in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of southern Morocco. The town is the center of a rural community comprising several villages. The kasbah was originally established in the 17th century, consisting of a fortified village, a ksar, strategically positioned along the river and at the entrance to the Skoura Palmeraie. Towards the late 19th century, M’hamed Ben Brahim Nasiri, a faqih from a local privileged family residing in the ksar (descendants of the family associated with the distinguished Zawiya Nasiriyya in Tamegroute), was chosen by Madani El Glaoui (elder brother of Thami el Glaoui) to teach his sons the Qur’an. As compensation, El Glaoui commissioned his craftsmen to build a tighremt (fortified mansion) on the ksar at Nasiri. Continue driving to El Kelaat M’Gouna.
El Kelaa M’gouna - Kelâa M’Gouna, also known as Tighremt n’ Imgunen, El-Kelâa M’Gouna, El Kelaâ Mgouna, or Kalaat M’Gouna, is an oasis town with around 20,000 inhabitants in the province of Tinghir in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of southern Morocco. It is renowned as the “Rose City” of Morocco. (possible to visit rose water cooperative) Continue to Boumalen.
Boumalne Dades - A lush band of orchards, grain fields, and vegetable patches stretches over 30 km into the High Atlas near Boumalne. On a hike lasting about an hour and a half, you will experience the tranquility and perseverance with which the Berbers have cultivated this beautiful land for centuries. At the river oasis’s edge, you will witness the impressive “Monkey Fingers” rock formation and original kasbahs with expansive views of the valley.
After your hike, stop at a restaurant in the Dadès Valley for refreshments. From the terrace, enjoy a fantastic panoramic view of the green belt below, contrasting with the red-brown, sometimes bizarrely shaped rocks. Mighty Kasbahs tower over the river, and simple houses in the mud villages nestle on the slopes.
Boumalne - Tinghir - Erfoud - Merzouga
Tinghir - Back in the vehicle, follow the Todra River. About 15 kilometers after Tinerhir, you reach the narrowest and most spectacular passage of the Todra Gorge. Here, the river has carved deep into the High Atlas rocks. Walk into the narrow area and cross the river on a concrete ford. On both sides of the gorge, which is only a few meters wide, the red-brown rocks rise almost vertically up to 300 meters.
Erfoud - Continue via Erfoud, the rust-red oasis town with 300,000 date palms.
Merzouga Desert - Arrive at the desert and sand dunes of Merzouga. Switch to dromedaries and ride for 30 minutes to the tent camp. (If preferred, luggage can be transported to the camp by jeep.) Comfort tents for 2 people with electricity and a sink are available. Enjoy meals around the campfire and sometimes a little music under the 360-degree starry sky. If guests prefer to stay in an auberge, that is also possible. However, the camp is recommended as a highlight, even for those inexperienced in camping.
Merzouga - Rissani - Alnif - Tarbalte - Tazaine - Tamgroute - Zagora - Agdz to the Accommodation
Merzouga Desert - After breakfast, spend half a day in the Sahara. Options include a camel ride or jeep tour, or simply relaxing in the sand dunes. Continue on.
Rissani - Visit Moulay Ali Sherif’s mausoleum and the ksar Aknous.
Alnif - In Alnif, take a lunch break, then explore the fossil and trilobite exhibition before continuing to Tazarine.
Tamgrout - In Tamegroute, discover the centuries-old art of pottery and the treasures of Tamegroute’s unique library. A German-speaking employee will guide you through the venerable library, which houses one of the most valuable and oldest collections of books and scripts of the Koran in all of North Africa. Afterwards, walk with your guide to a traditional pottery workshop. For centuries, pottery families have been crafting the green glazed pottery, Tamegroute’s trademark, by hand. Continue to Zagora.
Zagora - Today, a weekly market takes place in Zagora. While strolling through the market with your driver/guide, you will primarily encounter locals stocking up on groceries and everyday goods, selling fresh fruit, vegetables, and dates, or exchanging news with acquaintances from the region over mint tea. Browse through traditional handicrafts and savor the culinary delights while the scent of oriental spices fills the air - the Zagora market is a feast for all the senses! Breakfast. Detour to Tamegroute (Zaouia with its famous library), 22 km away, then continue through the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate. Over a million date palms grow in the Middle Draa, along with fruit trees, almond, and olive trees. The journey passes through old villages, sand and stone deserts, and herds of camels. Dinner and overnight stay in a well-maintained house in Agdz.
Agdz - Ouarzazate - Ait Ben Haddou - Telouet - Tichka Pass - Marrakech
Agdz - After breakfast, depart Agdz for Ouarzazate via the Ait Saoun Pass at 1600 meters, with its spectacular mountain rocks, bidding farewell from above to the Draa Valley and its million date palms.
Ouarzazate - Ouarzazate is known as “Little Hollywood” in Morocco. Visit the Kasbah of Taourirte (a short tour of a film studio is available upon request).
Ait Ben Haddou - Travel via Ait Benhaddou, a Berber fortress (ksar) built into the rocks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (visit). Lunch break.
Telouet - From Ksar Ait Ben Haddou, detour into the Ounila Valley, 22 km away, following a smaller road via Telouet through the rugged, barren mountains. In the valley, the Ounila River is accompanied by a green band of vegetable gardens and oasis fields, contrasting with the red-brown rocks of the canyon. Several stops offer wonderful views of the picturesque valley.
Tizi n’Tichka - From Telouet to the bustling royal city of Marrakesh, drive through fertile plains, pine forests, and, accompanied by gnarled juniper trees, wind further up the Atlas Mountains. Cross the High Atlas at the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass at an altitude of 2,260 meters. In winter and spring, snow is often present. Arrive in Marrakesh, the world of the Arabian Nights.
- Depending on the accommodation time, visit the vast Jemaa el Fna marketplace, where snake charmers, water sellers, fire eaters, and storytellers gather every evening. Overnight stay in an authentic riad in the old town with breakfast only.
