- Koutoubia Mosque - Established in 1147 by the Almohad caliph Abd al-Mu’min following his conquest of Marrakesh from the Almoravids, the Koutoubia Mosque is a significant historical site. A second version of the mosque was completely reconstructed by Abd al-Mu’min around 1158, with Ya’qub al-Mansur potentially completing the minaret around 1195. This second mosque is the one that remains today, showcasing Almohad and Moroccan mosque architecture. The minaret tower, standing at 77 meters (253 ft), features diverse geometric arch designs and is crowned with a spire and metal orbs. It likely influenced other structures like the Giralda of Seville and the Hassan Tower of Rabat, which were constructed shortly after in the same period. The minaret is also a notable landmark and symbol of Marrakesh.

At its peak, it was the largest Islamic college in the Maghreb. Named after the nearby Ben Youssef Mosque, built by the Almoravid Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf in the early 12th century, the madrasa was commissioned by the Saadian Sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib in the 16th century.
