Your adventure begins at Trou Aux Cerfs, a renowned natural attraction. This volcanic crater stands approximately 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of about 100 meters.
Unlike typical volcanic landscapes, Trou aux Cerfs is encircled by a vast expanse of lush forest, featuring indigenous plant species and towering green pine trees. It is believed that Trou aux Cerfs erupted once and has been dormant for the past 700,000 years, though experts suggest it could become active again.
A highlight of this visit is the 360-degree view of Curepipe town and the breathtaking vistas of Rempart Mountain, Trois Mamelles, and the Port-Louis-Moka mountain range.
- Mare aux Vacoas - Next, proceed to Mare Aux Vacoas reservoir, the largest on the island, with a capacity of nearly 26 million cubic meters. It is a popular stop for tourists exploring the island’s southern region.
While it may not be as extravagant as other attractions in Mauritius, Mare aux Vacoas is a hidden gem nestled among dense forests. It’s an ideal spot to unwind and escape the usual hustle and bustle. The reservoir offers a stunning view worth capturing.
- Grand Bassin - Continue your journey to Ganga Talao, a crater lake situated about 550 meters above sea level in the mountainous Southwest of Mauritius. Along the shoreline, you’ll find a temple and several small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities.
During your visit to this sacred site, you’ll be captivated by the towering statue of Lord Shiva. Rest assured, at Grand Bassin, you’ll find the Hindu God Lord Shiva, smiling and serene. The statue stands 33 meters tall, making it the tallest known statue in Mauritius. Ganga Talao is a major attraction, drawing many visitors who come to pray, meditate, or simply enjoy a walk by the lake and the stunning surrounding views.
- Alexandra Falls Car Park - Then, travel to Alexandra Falls, where you can admire the cloud forest of Mt Cocotte and the waterfall, along with views down to the south coast.
For waterfall enthusiasts, this is a must-see! Alexandra Falls is hidden deep within the Black River Gorges jungle and resembles a scene from a movie. Exploring this enchanting setting is truly unique! The allure of cascading water, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of local birds and wildlife, provides a perfect escape for mental relaxation. Don’t miss the chance to capture the panoramic view of the South Coast with its turquoise ocean. The surroundings of the waterfalls resemble a real jungle book, offering tranquility and peace while you enjoy one of Mauritius’ top attractions.
- Black River Gorges National Park - Next, head to Gorge Viewpoint for a breathtaking panoramic view of endless green landscapes. Amidst the pristine rainforest of Mauritius, you’ll find nearly 17,000 acres of rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and unparalleled flora and fauna in the southwestern region. You’ll be amazed by the height of the viewing area above the gorge. To the right of the viewpoint, you’ll see a stunning waterfall. The path leading to the viewpoint has a unique ambiance, with some souvenir stalls. The Black River Gorges Nature Reserve was established to preserve the island’s natural vegetation and is one of Mauritius’ most significant sights.
The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of the island’s remaining rainforest and is home to numerous species of wild animals and birds.
- Chamarel - Travel through Chamarel village to reach Le Morne village. You’ll have the opportunity to experience the culture and lifestyle of Chamarel’s residents.
Upon arriving in Chamarel, head to the Chamarel Viewpoint, a family-friendly spot offering a stunning panoramic view of the entire Chamarel village below. From here, you’ll see lush greenery and the turquoise waters of the southwest coast, with Le Morne Brabant to the left and La Tourelle du Tamarin to the right. It’s recommended to bring sunglasses and a camera to capture the splendid view of the green hilly region and an aerial view of Ile Aux Benitiers.
- Ilot Fourneau - Head to Islet Fourneau to enjoy a 3-course Mauritian lunch. Upon reaching Le Morne village, board a boat at the Jetty and set off to Islet Fourneau. Upon arrival, enjoy a welcome drink while relaxing on the Sun Loungers, taking in the panoramic view of Le Morne mountain. Capture romantic and beautiful photos if you’re with a loved one.
