- Trou aux Cerfs - Start your 8-hour private tour of the southwest with a convenient hotel pick-up anywhere in Mauritius. You’ll be warmly welcomed by our certified guide, and after settling into your comfortable vehicle, you’ll head to your first destination.
Your journey begins at Trou Aux Cerfs, a renowned natural attraction in Mauritius. This dormant volcanic crater stands approximately 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of about 100 meters.
Unlike typical volcanic landscapes, the crater of Trou aux Cerfs is encircled by a vast expanse of lush forest, featuring indigenous plant species and towering green pine trees. It is believed that Trou aux Cerfs erupted once and has been dormant for the past 700,000 years, with experts suggesting a potential for future activity.
A major highlight is the 360-degree view of Curepipe town and the stunning vistas of Rempart Mountain, Trois Mamelles, and the Port-Louis-Moka mountain range.
- Mare aux Vacoas - Next, visit the Mare Aux Vacoas reservoir, the largest on the island, with a capacity of nearly 26 million cubic meters. It’s a popular stop for tourists exploring the island’s southern region.
While it may not be as extravagant as other attractions, Mare aux Vacoas is a hidden gem nestled among dense forests. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy a few peaceful moments away from the usual hustle and bustle. The reservoir offers a breathtaking view that’s perfect for photography.
- Grand Bassin - Continue to Ganga Talao, commonly known as Grand Bassin, located about 550 meters above sea level in the mountainous southwest of Mauritius. This captivating lake, situated in the crater of an extinct volcano, is not only beautiful and tranquil but also considered sacred. A temple and several small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities line the shore.
During your visit, you’ll be amazed by the enormous statue of Lord Shiva. Rest assured, at Grand Bassin, you’ll find the Hindu God Lord Shiva, smiling and serene. The statue stands 33 meters tall, making it the tallest known statue in Mauritius. Ganga Talao attracts many visitors who come to pray, meditate, or simply enjoy a walk by the lake and its stunning surroundings. The lake is approximately 18 meters deep and teeming with fish.
- Alexandra Falls - Your next stop is Alexandra Falls, situated about 700 meters above sea level and one of Mauritius’s most popular natural sites.
You’ve likely seen its images on postcards or in videos showcasing Mauritius’s beauty. Alexandra Falls is not only famous for its breathtaking beauty but also offers visitors a unique experience with nature.
While there, don’t miss the opportunity to capture the panoramic view of the South-East Coast with its turquoise ocean. For a full view, you can climb a wooden platform.
To your right is Alexandra Falls, appearing as a silent white stream cascading over rocky outcrops. You’ll also have a view of Mauritius’s pristine green valley, home to many endemic bird species and flora. It’s a sight that soothes the eyes.
- Black River Gorges National Park - Next, head to the gorge viewpoint, the best spot for a panoramic view. Located midway between Chamarel and Alexandra Falls, this stop offers a stunning panorama. The viewpoint is just a 3-5 minute walk from the road and is truly spectacular. It’s a must-visit location during a road trip from Grand Bassin to Le Morne. Amidst Mauritius’s untouched rainforest, you’ll find nearly 17,000 acres of rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and unparalleled flora and fauna in the southwestern region.
You’ll be amazed at how elevated the viewing area is above the gorge below. There’s a lovely waterfall to your right.
The national park is renowned for its diverse endemic flora and fauna, and the viewpoint provides an overview of its true essence.
The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of the island’s remaining rainforest and is home to numerous species of wild animals and birds.
- Chamarel - After a short drive, you’ll pass through Chamarel village, where you can experience the unique culture of this charming village, distinct from others in Mauritius.
Then, proceed to the Chamarel Viewpoint, a family-friendly spot offering a stunning panoramic view of the entire Chamarel village below. From here, you’ll see the lush greenery and turquoise waters of the southwest coast, with Le Morne Brabant to the left and La Tourelle du Tamarin to the right. It’s recommended to bring sunglasses and a camera to capture the splendid view of the green hilly region and an aerial view of Ile Aux Benitiers.
Afterward, enjoy a 3-course Mauritian lunch at a local restaurant, featuring fresh salads, rice, soups, chicken curry, or fish and vegetables. You’ll have options, and the chef will discuss your preferences with you.
- Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth Geopark - Next, visit the seven-colored earth, a natural phenomenon and prominent tourist attraction. The colors result from the conversion of basaltic lava to clay minerals. A surreal, lunar-like display of rainbow-hued sand dunes unfolds before you, leaving you utterly mesmerized. Set amidst lush green vegetation, this unique geological wonder is one of nature’s amazing creations that will make you say “Wow.”
The area comprises sand dunes of seven distinct colors: red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow. What’s even more fascinating is that if you mix the colored earth together, they’ll eventually settle into separate layers. The colors may even play tricks on you, appearing as shadows.
There’s also a Tortoise Park and Souvenir Shop offering a variety of memorabilia, including local products from Chamarel, while the Coffee shop provides a delightful cafe experience.
- Chamarel Waterfalls - Next, visit the tallest single-drop waterfall in Mauritius, the Chamarel Waterfall, standing about 100 meters high. This striking natural wonder is surrounded by dense vegetation. Fed by the waters of three distinct streams flowing into the Saint-Denis River, it has a powerful rush with a peak flow rate exceeding 40,000 m³ per minute. The St. Denis rivers flow through fields, gorges, and green spaces towards the sea, creating a splendid view. Overhanging the ledge of a basalt cliff, the Chamarel Waterfall cascades into an oval pool before flowing down a 6km tropical-forest-fringed canyon to Baie du Cap.
Tourists can view the waterfalls from the upper deck at the Chamarel Seven Colored Earth or from below.
The Chamarel falls are undoubtedly the most famous and recognized waterfalls in Mauritius, making them a must-see attraction for tourists. If you’re visiting, you simply cannot miss these magnificent and “best waterfalls in Mauritius!”
