- Trou aux Cerfs - Start your 7-8 hour scenic tour of the southwest with a convenient hotel pick-up anywhere in Mauritius. You’ll be warmly welcomed by our certified guide and, after settling into your comfortable vehicle, you’ll embark on your first destination.
Your journey begins at Trou Aux Cerfs, a renowned natural attraction in Mauritius. This dormant volcanic crater stands approximately 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of about 100 meters.
Unlike typical volcanic landscapes, the crater of Trou aux Cerfs is encircled by a vast expanse of lush forest, featuring indigenous plant species and towering green pine trees. It is believed that Trou aux Cerfs erupted once and has remained dormant for the past 700,000 years; experts suggest there is a potential for future activity.
One of the main highlights is the 360-degree view of the town of Curepipe, along with the majestic vistas of Rempart Mountain, Trois Mamelles, and the Port-Louis-Moka mountain range.
- Reservoir Viewpoint - Next, proceed to Mare Aux Vacoas reservoir, the largest on the island, with a capacity of nearly 26 million cubic meters. It is a popular stop for tourists exploring the southern part of the island.
While it may not be as extravagant as other attractions in Mauritius, Mare aux Vacoas is a hidden gem nestled among dense forests. It’s the perfect spot to unwind for a few moments away from the usual hustle and bustle. The reservoir offers a stunning view that’s worth capturing.
- Grand Bassin - Continue your journey to Ganga Talao, commonly known as Grand Bassin, a crater lake situated about 550 meters above sea level in the mountainous southwest of Mauritius. Along the shoreline, you’ll find a temple and several small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities.
During your visit to this sacred site, you’ll be captivated by the enormous statue of Lord Shiva. Rest assured, at Grand Bassin, you’ll find the Hindu God Lord Shiva, smiling and serene. The statue stands 33 meters tall, making it the tallest known statue in Mauritius. Ganga Talao is a major attraction in Mauritius, drawing many visitors who come to pray, meditate, or simply enjoy a walk by the lake and take in the beautiful surroundings. The lake is approximately 18 meters deep and home to a healthy population of fish.
- Alexandra Falls - Your next stop is Alexandra Falls, located about 700 meters above sea level and one of the most popular natural sites in Mauritius.
You’ve likely seen its images on postcards or in videos showcasing the beauty of Mauritius. Alexandra Falls is indeed one of the island’s most iconic and popular sites. Renowned not only for its breathtaking beauty, Alexandra Falls also offers visitors a unique experience with nature.
While there, don’t miss the opportunity to capture the panoramic view of the South-East Coast with its turquoise ocean. For a full view, you can climb a wooden platform.
To your right is Alexandra Falls. From your vantage point, the waterfall appears as a silent white stream cascading over rocky outcrops. You’ll also have a view of Mauritius’s pristine green valley, home to many endemic bird species and flora. It’s a sight that soothes the eyes.
- Black River Gorges National Park - Next, head to the gorge viewpoint, the best spot for a panoramic view. Midway between Chamarel and Alexandra Falls, stop here for a breathtaking panorama. The viewpoint is just a 3-5 minute walk from the road and is truly spectacular. It’s a must-visit location during a road trip from Grand Bassin to Le Morne. Amidst the untouched rainforest of Mauritius, you’ll find nearly 17,000 acres of rolling hills, deep valleys, stunning waterfalls, and unparalleled natural beauty in the southwestern region.
You’ll be amazed at how elevated the viewing area is above the gorge below. There’s a lovely waterfall to your right.
The national park is renowned for its diverse endemic flora and fauna, and the viewpoint provides an overview of its true essence.
The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of the island’s remaining rainforest and is home to many species of wild animals and birds.
- La Vallee des Couleurs - Next, visit the Twenty-Three colored earth, a natural phenomenon and prominent tourist attraction. The colors have evolved through the transformation of basaltic lava into clay minerals. A surreal, lunar-like display of rainbow-hued sand dunes unfolds before your eyes, leaving you utterly mesmerized. Set amidst lush green vegetation, this unique geological wonder is one of those amazing creations of nature that make you say “Wow.”
It is a relatively large area of sand dunes featuring sand in seven distinct colors: red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow. What’s even more fascinating is that if you mix the colored earth together, they’ll eventually settle into separate layers. You may also find the colors playing tricks on you, appearing as shadows.
There’s also a Tortoise Park and Souvenir Shop offering a variety of memorabilia, including local products, while the Coffee shop provides a delightful cafe experience.
- La Vallee des Couleurs - After some time, visit the Chamouny Waterfall, undoubtedly the most famous single-drop waterfall in Mauritius. This striking natural wonder stands amidst dense vegetation.
This waterfall is the most renowned and recognized in Mauritius, making it a main attraction for tourists. If you’re visiting, you simply cannot miss the magnificent “best waterfalls in Mauritius.”
- Gris Gris Beach - After a short drive, pass through the village of Souillac, where you can experience the unique culture of this charming village, distinct from others in Mauritius.
Upon arriving at Gris Gris, you’ll have a fantastic viewpoint of the cliffs and witness the waves crashing against the rocks. There’s a small garden offering many quiet spots to relax on one of the benches while enjoying the view of the sea, waves, and rock cliffs. From the garden, a path leads to a small beach where you can admire the sea up close. Despite the white sandy beach, the waves and currents are extremely strong, so swimming is not advised. Instead, take a stroll and enjoy the view.
Afterward, head to a local restaurant to savor a 3-course Mauritian lunch featuring fresh salads, rice, soups, chicken curry, or fish and vegetables. You’ll have a choice, and the chef will explain the options and ask for your preference.
