- Trou aux Cerfs - Start your 8-hour tour with a convenient hotel pick-up from your accommodation anywhere in Mauritius. You will be warmly welcomed by our guide, and after boarding your comfortable vehicle, you’ll set off for your first destination.
Your journey begins at Trou Aux Cerfs, a renowned natural attraction in Mauritius. This dormant volcanic crater is approximately 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of about 100 meters.
Unlike typical volcanic features, the crater of Trou aux Cerfs is encircled by a vast expanse of lush forest, featuring indigenous plant species and towering green pine trees. It is believed that Trou aux Cerfs erupted once and has remained dormant for the past 700,000 years; experts suggest there is a potential for future activity.
One of the main highlights is the 360-degree view of the town of Curepipe, along with the majestic vistas of Rempart Mountain, Trois Mamelles, and the Port-Louis-Moka mountain range.
- Mare aux Vacoas - Next, proceed to the Mare Aux Vacoas reservoir, the largest on the island, with a capacity of nearly 26 million cubic meters. It is a popular stop for tourists exploring the southern part of the island.
While it may not be as extravagant as other attractions in Mauritius, Mare aux Vacoas is a hidden gem nestled between dense forests. It offers a perfect spot to relax and escape the usual hustle and bustle. The reservoir provides a stunning view worth capturing.
- Grand Bassin - Continue your journey to Ganga Talao, commonly known as Grand Bassin, a crater lake situated about 550 meters above sea level in the mountainous southwest of Mauritius. On its shores, you’ll find a temple and several small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities.
During your visit to this sacred site, you’ll be captivated by the enormous statue of Lord Shiva. Rest assured, at Grand Bassin, you’ll find the Hindu God Lord Shiva, smiling and serene. The statue stands 33 meters tall, making it the tallest known statue in Mauritius. Ganga Talao attracts many visitors who come to pray, meditate, or simply enjoy a walk by the lake and its beautiful surroundings. The lake is approximately 18 meters deep and home to a healthy population of fish.
Your full-day scenic tour of the southwest concludes with transportation back to your hotel.
- Alexandra Falls - The next stop is Alexandra Falls, located about 700 meters above sea level, and is one of the most popular nature sites in Mauritius.
You’ve likely seen its images on postcards or in videos showcasing the beauty of Mauritius. Alexandra Falls is indeed one of the island’s most iconic and popular sites. Known for its breathtaking beauty, Alexandra Falls also offers visitors a unique experience with nature.
While there, don’t miss the opportunity to capture the panoramic view of the South-East Coast with its turquoise ocean. For a complete view, you can climb a wooden platform.
To your right is Alexandra Falls. From your vantage point, the waterfall appears as a silent white stream cascading over rocky outcrops. You’ll also have a view of Mauritius’s pristine green valley, home to many endemic bird species and flora. It’s a sight that soothes the eyes.
- Black River Gorges National Park - Next, head to the gorge viewpoint, the best spot for a panoramic view. Midway between Chamarel and Alexandra Falls, stop here for a stunning panorama. The viewpoint is just a 3-5 minute walk from the road and offers a truly spectacular view. It’s a must-stop location during a road trip from Grand Bassin to Le Morne. Amidst the untouched rainforest of Mauritius, you’ll find nearly 17,000 acres of rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and unparalleled beauty of flora and fauna in the southwestern region.
You’ll be amazed at how elevated the viewing area is above the gorge below. There’s a lovely waterfall to your right.
The national park is renowned for its diverse array of endemic flora and fauna, and the viewpoint provides an overview of its true essence.
The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of the island’s remaining rainforest and is home to many species of wild animals and birds.
- Bois Cheri Tea Factory and Tea Museum - Then, proceed to the Bois Chéri Tea Factory. A guide will lead you through the factory and tea plantation, offering insights into the history, stories, and significance of tea production in Mauritius.
After the guided tour of the tea factory, you’ll visit the tea production museum to learn more about the history of tea in Mauritius.
Bois Chéri offers a fantastic panoramic view of the island’s south. Today, Bois Chéri produces a new range of flavored teas, green teas, and herbal teas, which you can taste during your visit.
Your visit to the Bois Chéri plantation includes:
- A guided tour of the Bois Chéri tea factory
- A visit to the tea museum

- Gris Gris Beach - Next, head to Souillac to witness the breathtaking view of Gris-Gris. The allure of Gris-Gris lies in its scenery, where high cliffs drop dramatically to the sea, and the refreshing winds of the Indian Ocean blow year-round.
Far from the idyllic setting of calm seas and tranquil scenery, Gris-Gris Beach is known for its sea cliffs and offers visitors a magnificent view from the top. This is undoubtedly a sight worth seeing. Coral reefs do not surround this part of the island, allowing large waves to crash directly onto the cliffs.
You’ll have an excellent viewpoint on the cliffs and witness the waves crashing against the rocks.
Afterward, you’ll head to a local restaurant to enjoy a 3-course Mauritian lunch, featuring fresh salads, rice, soups, chicken curry, or fish and vegetables. You’ll have a choice, and the chef will explain the options and ask for your preference.
- La Vanille Nature Park - Finally, visit La Vanille Crocodile Park, where you’ll discover the flora and fauna native to Mauritius. You’ll have the opportunity to observe animals in the reserve, including Nile Crocodiles, tenrecs, eels, iguanas, and turtles from Madagascar and Seychelles, all in accordance with the animal welfare act.
You’ll be introduced to a collection of fossils of animals now extinct in Mauritius and surrounding islands, such as the dodo and the elephant bird of Madagascar. You’ll also learn about insects, as La Vanille Nature Park features an insectarium with a rare collection of species from around the world.
The park spans 3.5 hectares in the island’s south and is home to many other animals, including monkeys, bats, deer, geckos, wild boars, and carp, to name a few. The site also houses 2,000 Nile crocodiles, which you can observe at various stages of their growth.
