- Trou aux Cerfs - Start your 8-hour private southwest tour with a convenient hotel pick-up from any location in Mauritius. You’ll be warmly welcomed by our certified guide, and after settling into your comfortable vehicle, you’ll embark on your first destination.
Your journey begins at Trou Aux Cerfs, a renowned natural attraction in Mauritius. This dormant volcanic crater stands approximately 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of about 100 meters.
Unlike typical volcanic landscapes, the crater of Trou aux Cerfs is encircled by a vast expanse of lush forest, featuring indigenous plant species and towering green pine trees. It is believed that Trou aux Cerfs erupted once and has remained dormant for the past 700,000 years; experts suggest there is a potential for future activity.
One of the main highlights is the breathtaking 360-degree view of Curepipe town and the majestic vistas of Rempart Mountain, Trois Mamelles, and the Port-Louis-Moka mountain range.
- Mare aux Vacoas - Next, proceed to Mare Aux Vacoas reservoir, the largest on the island, with a capacity of nearly 26 million cubic meters. It is a popular stop for tourists exploring the southern part of the island.
While it may not be as extravagant as other attractions in Mauritius, Mare aux Vacoas is a hidden gem nestled among thick forests. It’s the perfect spot to unwind for a few moments away from the usual hustle and bustle. The reservoir offers a stunning view worth capturing.
- Grand Bassin - Continue to Ganga Talao, commonly known as Grand Bassin, located about 550 meters above sea level in the mountainous southwest of Mauritius. This captivating lake, nestled in the crater of an extinct volcano, is not only beautiful and serene but also considered sacred. A temple and several small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities grace its shores.
During your visit, you’ll be amazed by the towering statue of Lord Shiva. Rest assured, at Grand Bassin, you’ll find the Hindu God Lord Shiva, smiling and peaceful. The statue stands 33 meters tall, making it the tallest known statue in Mauritius. Ganga Talao attracts many visitors who come to pray, meditate, or simply enjoy a walk by the lake and its stunning surroundings. The lake is approximately 18 meters deep and teeming with fish.
- Alexandra Falls - Your next stop is Alexandra Falls, situated around 700 meters above sea level and one of the most popular natural sites in Mauritius.
You’ve likely seen its beauty captured in postcards or videos showcasing Mauritius. Alexandra Falls is not only famous for its breathtaking beauty but also offers visitors a unique experience with nature.
While there, don’t miss the opportunity to capture the panoramic view of the South-East Coast with its turquoise ocean. For a full view, climb the wooden platform.
To your right is Alexandra Falls. From your vantage point, the waterfall appears as a silent white stream cascading over rocky outcrops. You’ll also enjoy a view of Mauritius’s pristine green valley, home to many endemic bird species and flora. It’s a sight to soothe the eyes.
- Black River Gorges National Park - Next, head to the gorge viewpoint, the best spot for a panoramic view. Midway between Chamarel and Alexandra Falls, stop here for a stunning panorama. The viewpoint is just a 3-5 minute walk from the road and offers a spectacular view. It’s a must-stop location during a road trip from Grand Bassin to Le Morne. Amidst the untouched rainforest of Mauritius, you’ll find nearly 17,000 acres of rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and unparalleled flora and fauna in the southwestern region.
You’ll be amazed at how elevated the viewing area is above the gorge below. There’s a lovely waterfall to your right.
The national park is renowned for its diverse endemic flora and fauna, and the viewpoint provides an overview of its true essence.
The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of the island’s remaining rainforest and is home to many species of wild animals and birds.
- Chamarel - After a short drive, you’ll pass through Chamarel village, where you can experience the unique culture of this charming village, distinct from others in Mauritius.
Then, head to the Chamarel Viewpoint, a family-friendly spot offering a stunning panoramic view of the entire Chamarel village below. From there, you’ll see lush greenery and the turquoise waters of the southwest coast, with Le Morne Brabant to the left and La Tourelle du Tamarin to the right. It’s recommended to bring sunglasses and a camera to capture the splendid view of the green hilly region and an aerial view of Ile Aux Benitiers.
Afterward, enjoy a 3-course Mauritian lunch at a local restaurant, featuring fresh salads, rice, soups, chicken curry, or fish and vegetables. You’ll have options, and the chef will explain and inquire about your preferences.
- Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth Geopark - Next, visit the seven-colored earth, a natural phenomenon and prominent tourist attraction. The colors result from the conversion of basaltic lava to clay minerals. A surreal, lunar-like spectacle of rainbow-hued sand dunes unfolds before you, leaving you utterly mesmerized. Set amidst lush green vegetation, this unique geological wonder is one of nature’s amazing creations that will make you say “Wow.”
The area comprises sand dunes of seven distinct colors: red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow. What’s fascinating is that if you mix the colored earth together, they’ll eventually settle into separate layers. The colors may even play tricks on you, appearing as shadows.
There’s also a Tortoise Park and Souvenir Shop offering a variety of memorabilia, including local products from Chamarel, while the Coffee shop provides a delightful cafe experience.
- Chamarel Waterfalls - After some time, visit the tallest single-drop waterfall in Mauritius, standing about 100 meters high. The Chamarel Waterfall is a striking natural wonder amid dense vegetation. Fed by the waters of three distinct streams flowing into the Saint-Denis River, it has a powerful rush with a peak flow rate exceeding 40,000 m³ per minute. The St. Denis rivers flow through fields, gorges, and green spaces toward the sea, creating a splendid view. Overhanging the ledge of a basalt cliff, the Chamarel Waterfall splashes into an oval pool before flowing down a 6km tropical-forest-fringed canyon to Baie du Cap.
Tourists can choose to view the waterfalls from the upper deck at the Chamarel Seven Colored Earth or from below.
The Chamarel Falls are undoubtedly the most famous and recognized waterfalls in Mauritius, making them a must-see attraction for tourists. If you’re visiting, you simply cannot miss the magnificent “best waterfalls in Mauritius!”
