Discovering the Hidden Gems of Southwest Mauritius

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for destinations that offer both adventure and relaxation, and the southwest of Mauritius did not disappoint. Our journey began with a visit to the mesmerizing Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcanic crater surrounded by lush greenery. The kids were fascinated by the idea of standing on a volcano, and the panoramic views of Curepipe and the surrounding mountains were simply breathtaking.

Next, we made our way to Mare aux Vacoas, the largest reservoir on the island. Nestled within a serene forest, it was the perfect spot for a family picnic. We ended our visit with a refreshing drink at the coffee shop, soaking in the surreal landscape.

No trip to Mauritius would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and our tour included a delicious 3-course Mauritian lunch. We savored fresh salads, aromatic curries, and delectable desserts, all while enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The kids were adventurous with their food choices, and it was a joy to see them trying new flavors.

Our final stops were the Rhumerie St Aubin and the Bois Chéri Tea Factory. At the rum distillery, we learned about the traditional rum-making process and even got to sample some of the local varieties. The kids were intrigued by the machinery and the history behind it all. At the tea factory, we discovered the art of tea production and tasted some of the finest teas Mauritius has to offer. The panoramic views from the estate were the perfect backdrop to end our day.
