Kruger National Park - A sunset game safari in Kruger National Park offers a magical experience, capturing the African wilderness at its most atmospheric. Panorama Tour - Visit God’s Window, Bourkes Luck Potholes, Three Rondavels, and Lisbon Falls
God’s Window - A visit to God’s Window is a highlight of the Panorama Route and one of South Africa’s most breathtaking natural viewpoints. Perched high on the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment in Mpumalanga, God’s Window offers panoramic views over a vast expanse of the Lowveld, stretching across lush forests, dramatic cliffs, and distant plains that seem to go on forever. On clear days, you can see as far as the Kruger National Park and even Mozambique. A short walk through a misty, indigenous rainforest leads to several lookout points where the scenery unfolds in layers of color and depth, especially magical at sunrise or sunset. Aptly named for its awe-inspiring beauty, God’s Window is a place of quiet reflection and natural wonder, where visitors can pause and take in one of the most majestic vistas in all of Southern Africa.
Bourkes’ Luck Potholes - A visit to Bourke’s Luck Potholes is a fascinating stop along Mpumalanga’s Panorama Route, where geology and natural beauty come together in spectacular fashion. Formed over thousands of years by the swirling confluence of the Treur and Blyde Rivers, these deep cylindrical rock formations have been carved into the canyon floor, creating a surreal landscape of smooth, layered potholes in vibrant shades of red, yellow, and brown. Named after Tom Bourke, a hopeful prospector who believed the area was rich in gold, the site instead revealed nature’s far greater treasure—its raw artistry. Visitors can explore the area via a network of walkways and footbridges that offer incredible views of the potholes, waterfalls, and surrounding cliffs. With its dramatic scenery, rushing water, and educational displays, Bourke’s Luck Potholes is not only a visual marvel but also a powerful reminder of nature’s patient, sculpting force.
Three Rondavels - Visiting the Three Rondavels is a truly awe-inspiring experience and a highlight of South Africa’s Panorama Route. These three towering, round-topped peaks rise dramatically from the edge of the Blyde River Canyon, resembling the traditional African huts—known as rondavels—for which they are named. The viewpoint offers one of the most iconic and panoramic vistas in the country, with the massive rock formations set against the backdrop of the canyon’s deep gorges, winding river, and vast Lowveld beyond. The layers of color in the stone, shaped by centuries of erosion, add to the visual spectacle. Rich in both natural beauty and cultural significance, the site also tells stories of local tribal history and resistance. Whether bathed in golden morning light or the warm hues of sunset, the Three Rondavels never fail to leave visitors with a sense of wonder and appreciation for South Africa’s majestic landscapes.
Lisbon Falls - Visiting Lisbon Falls in Graskop is a breathtaking highlight along Mpumalanga’s famed Panorama Route. This majestic waterfall plunges approximately 94 m—making it the highest in the province—into a lush gorge carved by Lisbon Creek.
Morning safari. Travel from Kruger National Park through Mpumalanga to Johannesburg & Pretoria
Kruger National Park - A morning safari in Kruger National Park is one of the most rewarding times to explore the African bush, when the wilderness is fresh, cool, and alive with activity. As the sun rises over the savannah, golden light filters through the trees and casts long shadows across the landscape, creating the perfect backdrop for wildlife sightings. Early morning is prime time to see predators like lions and leopards, still active from their nighttime hunts, as well as elephants, buffalo, and various antelope beginning their day. With the bushveld at its most vibrant, birdlife is also abundant, with colorful species like lilac-breasted rollers and hornbills flitting about. Guided by experienced rangers in open safari vehicles, you’ll track animals using sounds, tracks, and keen observation, gaining insight into intricate workings of the ecosystem. The crisp morning air, peaceful atmosphere, and high chances of spotting iconic wildlife make a morning game drive in Kruger an unforgettable experience.
Mpumalanga - Traveling back from Kruger National Park through Mpumalanga Province to Johannesburg offers a scenic and reflective journey that highlights the diverse landscapes of South Africa. As you leave the wild bushveld behind, the route winds through the breathtaking Panorama Route, with its dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and sweeping valleys. You might catch glimpses of iconic sights like God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, and the Three Rondavels, which showcase the region’s natural beauty and geological wonders. The drive gradually ascends from the lowveld into the cooler, rolling highlands, passing quaint towns and fertile farmlands that reveal a quieter, rural side of the province. The changing scenery provides a peaceful transition from the raw wilderness of the park to the urban energy of Johannesburg. Arriving back in the city by late afternoon or evening, you carry with you memories of an unforgettable adventure through South Africa’s remarkable landscapes and wildlife.
