Matmata - Experience the unique opportunity to explore these captivating cave houses, which are a remarkable example of architecture and ancestral lifestyle. Some of these homes are still occupied, and local residents may invite you in to share insights about their way of life and the construction of these distinctive dwellings. Inside, you’ll find wells, earth-dug chambers, and inner courtyards.
Matmata is also famous for being the filming location of several scenes from the original 1977 Star Wars movie. The cave house where Luke Skywalker lived with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru was filmed here. Although the setting has changed slightly over time, many fans of the saga visit to immerse themselves in George Lucas’s world. Visitors can explore the interior of the house, now transformed into a Star Wars museum, featuring memorabilia and items from the film. -
Ksar Hadada - Ksar Hadada is an ancient fortified Berber village constructed from raw earth, situated in the Tataouine region of southern Tunisia. This ksar is one of the many historical sites in southern Tunisia, renowned for its unique architecture and its role in storing grain in large silo-shaped structures. The ksar comprises tower-like buildings known as ghorfas, which are chambers or cells built within the main building’s walls.
Ksar Hadada served as a filming location for some scenes in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, particularly those set on Tatooine, the desert planet where young Anakin Skywalker resides. Specifically, the ksar was used to depict the exterior of Anakin’s mother Shmi Skywalker’s house when Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi arrive in the village seeking parts to repair their ship. -
Chenini - Perched on a hill, the village of Chenini offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. Capture stunning photographs of the cacti, palm groves, and mountains that encircle this ancient village. The desert landscapes create a magical ambiance, with the changing daylight altering the colors of the soil and buildings.
A local guide will explain the construction and historical use of these villages over the centuries. Chenini is a perfect example of Berber architecture and how its inhabitants have adapted to desert conditions. Visitors will also learn about the significance of the ksar fortified village as a refuge and storage center.
Another notable feature of Chenini, like other villages in the area, is its ksar. This ancient citadel served both as a refuge and a storage place for food for the inhabitants.

In The Phantom Menace, Ksar Ouled Soltane was used to film the exterior of Anakin’s mother Shmi Skywalker’s house. The scene where Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi arrive on Tatooine in search of spaceship parts was shot in front of one of the ksar’s buildings. Indeed, the earth and stone towers of Ksar Ouled Soltane closely resemble Shmi Skywalker’s habitat as depicted in the film.
