Formed by the constant erosion of the mainland’s limestone cliffs starting 10–20 million years ago, the stormy Southern Ocean and fierce winds gradually wore away the softer limestone, creating caves in the cliffs.

These caves eventually turned into arches, and when they collapsed, rock stacks up to 45 meters high were left isolated from the shore.

• Loch Ard Gorge - Loch Ard Gorge is a haven of natural beauty, coastal wilderness, and maritime history. Take time to explore the trails, discovering the blowholes, offshore limestone stacks, and towering cliffs. Visit at dusk to watch the short-tailed shearwaters (muttonbirds) return home. Learn about the Loch Ard shipwreck and the area’s rich maritime history at the nearby Port Campbell Visitor Information Centre.
