- Sir Walter Scott, The Lay of the Last Minstrel, 1805.
Explore the landscapes that inspired Sir Walter Scott, a poet, novelist, and the guardian of Scotland’s romantic spirit. This one-day tour follows his journey from city to countryside, intertwining history, heritage, and the stunning scenery that fueled his literary creations.
Sir Walter was born in Edinburgh, and if the tour begins in the capital, it will pass by the street where he was born in 1771. His ancestral home was located to the south of the city, where he spent much of his early years.
The tour then ventures into the heart of the Scottish Borders, where Sir Walter constructed his cherished and grand Abbotsford House, near the charming town of Melrose. Surrounded by rolling hills, ancient ruins, and the River Tweed, this was the place he called home and where he wrote the stories that defined Scotland’s national identity.
