The Overton Park Shell is a historic bandshell and museum located in the Midtown Memphis haven known as Overton Park. Affectionately referred to as “The Shell” by Elvis Presley and many others, this legendary amphitheater is where Elvis Presley made his professional debut in 1954 at the age of nineteen, introducing live Rock & Roll to the global stage in a dynamic manner during a country music show headlined by yodeler Slim Whitman. The Shell held a special place for Elvis and his family, as they frequently visited and performed there over the years. Despite facing numerous challenges since its opening during the Great Depression of the 1930s, The Shell remains a state-of-the-art regional performing arts venue today, hosting 50 free concerts annually and accommodating up to 3,000 music enthusiasts in its beautiful park setting. The Shell’s captivating history is now shared through its new immersive Backstage History Experience guided tour, which connects nearly a century of vibrant Memphis and Midtown music histories.
