Even Food Critics Frequent - We've been to Liverpool numerous times, mainly limited to shopping, however we decided to make a long weekend in the city to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We'd recently been on a food tour in Harrogate and thought we'd try another. Great way to get your city bearings and doing the tour on day one meant we found some hidden local gems that even food critics frequent. (see later). Our host James was excellent, well informed, jovial and true passion for local economy support. We'd booked based on his responses to some of the reviews (witty, matter of fact and polite). The origins of each restaurant stop was explained and that added to the experience. We met at Bluecoats, which was a quiet hidden gem, where we sought sanctuary from the hub of Liverpool One. Unfortunately Scouse was not on the menu, but we weren't disappointed. A short walk to Lunya for a snack and then a brief walk to lunch and onwards. Further hidden gems followed and a "marmite" (love it or hate it) moment at a fantastic restaurant (that you might well pass by) owned by two brothers, whose savoury doughnut invention will test your senses. We loved it. We also hoped that Tom Parker-Bowells (food critic for the Mail) also approved?? On both tours we've met some lovely like minded "foodies" (mostly from Belfast, we must go there next - maybe James can branch out?). We all had different favourites from the tour which is a testament to the variety of food sampled and the city itself for offering it. Thankfully we had a guide, otherwise we'd have probably stuck to the more well trodden food emporiums. Simply excellent.
