Day 1: Fes – Middle Atlas Mountains – The Sahara Desert
Merzouga - The driver from Morocco Desert Travels will collect you from your hotel or Riad at 7 am to embark on a wonderful journey into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is the charming town of Ifrane, established by the French in the 1930s, often referred to as Morocco’s Switzerland due to its Alpine chalet-style architecture. The journey continues through the vast cedar forests surrounding the serene Berber town of Azrou, meaning “The Rock” in the local Berber language, where the well-known Barbary Apes, actually macaque monkeys, may join you for lunch in their natural environment.
Continuing through the Atlas Mountains, known for their towering presence, you will navigate through forested peaks, winding streams, and impressive rock formations, eventually reaching the significant town of Rissani at the edge of the Sahara. As you proceed south, you will be captivated by the sudden, magical appearance of the Erg Chebbi sand dunes. These towering dunes, reaching up to 50 meters, stretch eastward into the Algerian Sahara. Enjoy an unforgettable 90-minute camel trek into the stunning sunset, traversing the shifting sands before arriving at a traditional Berber desert camp. Spend the night in a cozy tent surrounded by towering dunes, savor a delicious dinner, and enjoy traditional Berber music under a sky filled with countless bright stars.
Day 2: Desert Dawn – Mighty Mountains – Marrakech
Marrakech - Begin the day early to witness the magnificent sunrise over the sand dunes, followed by a gentle camel ride back to a hotel for breakfast. During the ride, observe the changing shadows cast by the dunes as the day unfolds. After breakfast, the journey to Marrakech commences with a drive through the 300-meter deep Todgha Gorges, carved through the easternmost part of the High Atlas Mountains, where you can enjoy a hike around the picturesque village of Tinghir. The Tinghir and Todgha gorges are the highest and narrowest in Morocco, and arguably the most beautiful. Next, visit the beautifully preserved walled fortress or Kasbah of Taourirt, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcasing traditional Moroccan architecture, which you are free to explore. Continue through the High Atlas along the winding roads of the Tizi n’Tichka pass, 2,260 meters above sea level. The tour concludes in Marrakech, where you will be dropped off at your riad or hotel.
