- Koroni Castle - Located in the southeastern part of Messinia, on the first leg of the Peloponnese peninsula, lies the charming town of Koroni. This town is home to one of the finest examples of Venetian fortress architecture, with the castle of Koroni standing proudly on Akritas cape at the southern edge of the Messinian Gulf. Built by the Venetians in the 13th century and later renovated by the Ottomans in the 16th century, it is one of the few castles that include houses and churches within its walls.
The cruise takes us near and around the castle in the turquoise waters. Starting the day at Zaga Beach is a great way to begin the trip! Zaga Beach is a major attraction in Koroni, offering a stunning view of the castle. It is a long beach with soft sand and clear, warm water, perfect for a refreshing swim.
- Venetiko - Venetiko is an uninhabited island that is part of the Messenian Oinousses cluster, located south of Akritas cape. Its name is relatively recent and may be linked to the Venetian Rule, as the Roman traveler Pausanias referred to it as Thiganousa. The island is covered with bushes and is rich in Byzantine-era remnants, including the ruins of a tower, a well, and a late Byzantine building on the coast. This building might have been used for salt production or ship signaling. The northern tip of the island features a flat area that could have been a salt-pan, indicating that early inhabitants relied on salt production.
We anchor in the serene waters of a secluded bay, enjoying the calm and gentle surroundings.
-
Costa Navarino - Known for its unique heart shape, this island is part of the Messinian Oinousses complex. Locally referred to as “Kardia” due to its heart-shaped silhouette, this small rocky island is a skerry of Sapientza Island in the Messinian Gulf. This special Greek heart-shaped island is a popular attraction in photo albums worldwide.
-
Sapientza Isle - Situated opposite Methoni in the Peloponnese, Sapientza is considered one of the most beautiful islands in Messinia, combining wild vegetation with stunning beaches. On the island’s southern side stands a historic lighthouse built entirely of stone in 1885. The lighthouse was constructed to aid passing ships in navigating the dangerous waters, which have seen many shipwrecks. The name Sapientza, meaning “wisdom” in Italian, warns captains to be cautious in these treacherous waters. This area has been a naval passage since ancient times, connecting Italy to the Middle East, and served as an anchorage for fleets during the Byzantine era and Turkish domination.
We anchor at the bay of “Kokkina,” where we swim and enjoy local delicacies.
- Methoni Castle - Constructed by the Venetians in the early 13th century on a rocky promontory, Methoni Castle is one of the largest in the Mediterranean. Visitors will be amazed by the 14-arch stone bridge connecting the castle to the shore, replacing the previous timber bridge. The lion of St. Marc, a symbol of Venice, dominates the castle gate, where reliefs, emblems, blazons, inscriptions, huge gates—especially the main gate above the moat—and relics of two Ottoman bathhouses have survived.
At the southern edge of the castle, a fortified islet called Bourtzi floats. Built in 1500, Bourtzi served as a prison and execution site during the Turkish Occupation and is connected to the Sea Gate of the castle by a small paved road.
-
Foinikounta - Foinikounta is a picturesque village in the Messinia region, known as one of the most beautiful summer vacation spots in the South Peloponnese.
-
Marathi Beach - This wonderful pebble beach features chilly, crystal-clear waters and majestic wild beauty, with rocks to climb and explore on the sides. Ideal for those who enjoy privacy, as it is difficult to reach by car, ensuring a peaceful experience.
-
Agia Triada Beach - Also known as Lachanou, Agia Triada Beach is located east of the village with the same name, 3.5 kilometers from Koroni. This sandy beach is uniquely beautiful and far from the crowds. It is not organized, and the northernmost side of the coast starts from a steep hill that meets the sea, providing natural shade for a few hours. The church of Agia Triada is also nearby.
