Ascend approximately 500 meters over lava fields, craters, lava channels, and hot fumaroles to reach 3,000 meters—the highest altitude permitted by summit regulations—at the base of the South-East Crater, Etna’s most active cone.
This tour covers the upper slopes of Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano and the second most active in the world. The path remains above 2,500 meters, offering safe, regulated summit views. From a secure distance, admire the South-East Crater, the origin of many recent eruptions; access to the cone is restricted by Zafferana and Civil Protection due to extreme heat, instability, and potential collapses when magma is near the surface.
Descent: walk from 3,000 meters to the cable car station, then take the cable car back to the starting point.
Duration: approximately 5 hours • Distance: around 6.5 km • Elevation Gain: about 500 meters (may vary) • Difficulty: E – suitable for hikers accustomed to high altitudes.
