Join us as we journey through the heart of Naples’ Historic Center, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Starting at Piazza Bellini, where remnants of ancient Greek walls are still visible, we will pass by the Naples Conservatory. With a bit of luck, we might hear the young Neapolitan musicians rehearsing. Our path leads us to Via dei Tribunali, the Decumano Maggiore of ancient Neapolis, known for its vibrant atmosphere and wealth of attractions. Along the way, you’ll see the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore alla Pietrasanta, featuring its Romanesque bell tower, and the intriguing church of Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio in Arco. Just a short distance away, the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore, an Angevin masterpiece, and the Cathedral, home to the revered ampoule of San Gennaro’s miraculous blood relic, await your visit.
Returning to Spaccanapoli, the lower decumanus, you’ll stroll among bustling Neapolitan shops renowned for their nativity scenes. Discover the stunning Basilica of San Domenico Maggiore, set in its namesake square, offering a unique backdrop.
Our final destination is the exquisite Sansevero Chapel, where the Veiled Christ and your guide’s stories promise an unforgettable experience. Explore some of Naples’ oldest streets and head to the archaeological area of Carminiello and Mannesi, learning about the ancient ruins uncovered after a 1943 bombing raid. Continue to the basilica church of San Giorgio Maggiore, with its history dating back to the 4th century AD, and see its early-Christian origins, including the ancient apse that became the church’s entrance.
Stroll along Via San Biagio Dei Librai, affectionately known as “Spaccanapoli,” and immerse yourself in the vibrant scents, colors, and sounds of this narrow street at the heart of Naples’ historic center. On Via San Gregorio Armeno, the city’s historic craft workshop site, enjoy a brief coffee break at one of the area’s renowned bars. Spot a lock of hair from Diego Maradona, a legendary figure in Napoli’s football history. Next, admire the Nile God Statue in Piazza Nilo, dating back to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. Arrive at the picturesque Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, named after the surrounding Dominican Basilica, one of Naples’ most beautiful and significant churches, pivotal in the city’s chronological, political, and artistic history. Conclude your tour at Sansevero Chapel, home to the extraordinary Veiled Christ sculpture by Giussepe Sanmartino, crafted in 1753, and marvel at its intricate marble details.
