- Castel Sant’Elmo - Castel Sant’Elmo is a medieval fortress, now serving as a museum, situated on the Vomero hill near San Martino in Naples. Originally known as Paturcium, it occupies the site where a church dedicated to Sant’Erasmo stood from the 10th century, leading to its name evolution from Eramo to Ermo, and finally to Elmo.
This impressive structure, the city’s first castle by size, is partially carved from the natural Neapolitan yellow tuff rock and traces its origins to a Norman watchtower named Belforte. Its strategic significance has made it a highly sought-after asset, offering panoramic views of the entire city, the gulf, and the roads leading from the surrounding hills into the city from its 250-meter elevation.
In addition to housing the permanent “Naples Novecento” museum, the castle hosts various temporary exhibitions, fairs, and events. From 1998 to 2011, it was the springtime venue for the Napoli Comicon, which relocated to the Mostra d’Oltremare in 2012. Owned by the Italian State, since December 2014, it has been part of the Campania museum complex. In 2016, it welcomed 199,233 visitors [2].
- Posillipo - Posillipo is mentioned in ancient Greek sources as the first settlers of the promontory, which was then densely covered with rocks and trees. Roman ruins can be found near the shoreline and at the hill’s peak, including remnants of the openings that ventilated the tunnel leading to Publius Vedio Pollione’s residence. An amphitheater’s remains are also present. Following the ancient era, Naples’ population retreated within fortified walls, leaving the area to decline, vulnerable to barbarian invasions and neglect.
In modern times, the area remained largely undeveloped until the construction of Via Posillipo between 1812 and 1824. This road starts at the Mergellina port and runs along the coast, nearly parallel to the shoreline. Although much of the area was extensively rebuilt after World War II, it retains several historic buildings, including Villa Rosebery, the residence of the President of the Republic [3].

Naples is one of the largest and most captivating cities of art in the Mediterranean. As the capital of the Campania region, it ranks as the third largest Italian municipality after Rome and Milan. The city overlooks the namesake gulf, stretching from the Sorrento peninsula to the volcanic area of the Campi Flegrei, offering a breathtaking view with the majestic Vesuvius volcano and, in the distance, three stunning islands - Capri, Ischia, and Procida - resembling little gems emerging from the sea. Enjoy a panoramic city tour, including Piazza del Plebiscito with the Royal Palace, Galleria Umberto I, San Carlo Theater, Castel Sant’Elmo, Posillipo, and the seafront of Via Partenope. Knowledgeable guides will eloquently showcase the city’s monuments. Conclude with 3 to 4 hours at the Terme di Baia, where this spa complex provides various wellness options, including a thermal bath in the outdoor pool with hot water, saunas, massages, mud treatments, and whirlpools, all naturally sourced from the nearby volcanoes.
