• Forum - The Civil Forum was the hub of daily life in the city, surrounded by key public buildings for city administration, justice, business management, and commercial activities like markets. It also housed the main places of city worship.
• Tempio di Giove Capitolino - The Temple of Jupiter stands prominently on the Forum’s northern side, with Vesuvius providing a dramatic backdrop. After the colony’s establishment in 80 BC, the temple underwent significant renovation to become a true Capitolium, featuring statues of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, modeled after those in Rome’s Capitolium, placed on a high base for visibility from the Forum square.
• Macellum - The Macellum, a tuff of Quadri porticus, includes a worship hall on the elevated eastern side, aligned with the entrance. It served as the city market where food was purchased. Situated northeast of the Forum, it was strategically placed to avoid overcrowding in the square, given its popularity. The portico walls were adorned with scenes of daily life, such as fish and poultry sales, and mythological themes.
• Via dell’Abbondanza - This is one of Pompeii’s main streets, linking the Forum with the Amphitheatre.
• Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane) - Constructed in phases, the Stabian Baths date back to the 4th century BC. The main entrance on Via dell’Abbondanza opens to a large courtyard. To the left is the pool, while the right features a colonnade leading to the men’s quarters, divided into the apodyterium (dressing room), frigidarium (cold baths), tepidarium (medium temperature baths), and caldarium (hot baths). Heating was provided by a wall and floor piping system circulating hot air from furnaces and mobile braziers. The women’s quarters, adjacent to the men’s, were similarly divided but smaller and less ornate.
• Lupanare di Pompei - Known for its erotic paintings, the Pompeii brothel is a well-known excavation site. It functioned as a brothel, with most prostitutes being Greek and Oriental slaves. The building has two floors, with the owner’s and slaves’ quarters above and five rooms with built-in beds below. The name “Lupanare” derives from “Lupa,” the Latin word for ‘prostitute.’
• Teatro Grande - Constructed in the mid-2nd century BC and later restored in Roman style, the Large Theatre hosted Greek and Roman comedies and tragedies. It was the first major public building to be cleared of eruption deposits.
