• Piazza Porta Marina - Start your adventure at Porta Marina, the impressive entrance that once greeted sailors and merchants. As you walk through its steep, vaulted tunnel, you’ll transition from the modern world into the well-preserved streets of the ancient Roman city.
• Forum - The Civil Forum was the heart of daily life in the city, serving as the center for city administration, justice, business, trade activities like markets, and the main places of citizen worship.
• Tempio di Giove Capitolino - Dominating the north side of the Forum, the Temple of Jupiter stands with Mount Vesuvius rising behind it. When the colony was established (80 BC), the temple was extensively renovated to become a true Capitolium, featuring statues of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, similar to those in Rome, placed on a high base for visibility to those in the Forum square.
• Casa del Fauno - The House of the Faun is one of Pompeii’s largest and most luxurious private residences, occupying an entire city block. Named after the iconic bronze statue of a dancing faun in its main atrium, the house is a masterpiece of Roman architecture with Hellenistic influences. It is renowned for the Alexander Mosaic, depicting the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. With its two peristyle gardens and intricate floor mosaics, it symbolizes the immense wealth and refined taste of the city’s elite.
• Via dell’Abbondanza - Via dell’Abbondanza was the main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, running east/west from the Forum to Porta Sarno. In ancient times, it was bustling and noisy with shops, workshops (“officinae”), cafes, snack-bars, and restaurants.
• Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane) - Located behind the Temple of Jupiter, the Forum Baths date back to the years following the colony’s founding by General Silla (80 BC). Separate entrances were provided for women’s and men’s quarters. The men’s section includes an apodyterium (dressing room), also used as a tepidarium (medium temperature baths), frigidarium (cold baths), and calidarium (hot baths). Like many buildings in Pompeii, the baths suffered significant damage during the earthquake of 62 AD.
• Macellum - The Macellum features a tuff quadriporticus with an elevated worship hall on the eastern side, aligned with the entrance. Copies of two marble statues, a female and a male armed figure, are found in the niches of the side wall, along with a fragment of a larger statue, likely an emperor, Titus or Vespasian, indicating the area was intended for the imperial cult. To its left is a room for sacred board meetings, and to the right, a large room with a masonry counter, possibly for selling fish.
• Villa dei Misteri - Via delle Ville, often called the path to the Villa of the Mysteries, is a scenic road outside Pompeii’s city walls, leading from the Porto Ercolano gate. This ancient route connects the urban center to the suburbs, passing through a significant necropolis lined with impressive tombs. Its most famous destination is the Villa of the Mysteries, a suburban estate known for its stunning frescoes depicting Dionysian rites, offering a serene contrast to the bustling city streets.
• Teatro Grande - The Teatro Grande is a magnificent horseshoe-shaped auditorium built into a natural hillside, accommodating approximately 5,000 spectators. Dating back to the 2nd century BC, it was the first Greek-style stone theater in Pompeii, serving as the city’s main venue for comedies, tragedies, and pantomimes. The theater boasts a grand tiered seating area and a large stage background (scenae frons), showcasing how the Roman elite and commoners enjoyed large-scale public entertainment.
• Pompei La Basilica - The Basilica is one of Pompeii’s most significant buildings, located at the southwest corner of the Forum. Built in the 2nd century BC, it served as the city’s primary center for legal and commercial activities, functioning as both a courthouse and a place for business transactions. Its monumental interior featured a central nave surrounded by towering columns and a raised tribunal where judges presided over hearings. As the oldest building of its kind in the Roman world, it stands as a fundamental example of pre-imperial civic architecture.
