Our expedition begins at the Metro Materdei stop, which is famously known as a ‘MetroArte’ station. From there, we head to the Fontanelle Cemetery. This site, with its vast quantities of human bones and skulls, will certainly astound you. Originally, it served as a mass burial ground and later evolved into a site dedicated to the reverence of souls in Purgatory. Next on our route is the Basilica of Santa Maria alla Sanità. Here, you’ll be amazed by the unique double-ramped pulpit that envelopes the crypt on one side and ascends to the higher presbytery on the other - a true architectural marvel not seen elsewhere in Europe. We then traverse to two of its most renowned mansions, the Sanfelice Palace and Spagnuolo Palace, both prime examples of late Baroque architecture. Take a look at the birthplace of renowned Neapolitan citizen, Prince Antonio de Curtis, also known as Toto! As we cross through Borgo Vergini, you’ll encounter an authentic Neapolitan market. Finally, we conclude our trip at Porta San Gennaro, one of the oldest gateways into the city, dedicated to its most popular Patron.
