- Keweenaw Peninsula - With audio guides providing commentary based on GPS location, travelers can tailor their own itinerary along the tour route to suit their interests and schedule.
Alternatively, trip planners offer suggestions for half, full, or multi-day itineraries.
Some of the many highlights include:
- Brockway Mountain Drive - For a breathtaking drive above the Copper Country, head up Brockway Mountain. It’s the highest above-sea-level drive between the Allegheny and Rocky Mountain ranges, offering stunning views and excellent birdwatching opportunities.
- Copper Harbor - Copper Harbor marks the end of the road on the Keweenaw Peninsula. With just 150 permanent residents, it’s a wonderful place to both play and relax, featuring great beaches and world-class biking trails. Copper Harbor is also the departure point for the ferry to Isle Royale National Park.
- Eagle Harbor - As you travel from beach to beach and bay to bay, you are constantly reminded of Lake Superior’s potential for peril and danger in its angriest moods. Lighthouses served as literal beacons of safety for mariners. The 150-year-old octagonal lighthouse and museum at Eagle Harbor is a charming sight!
- Eagle River Falls - The Upper Peninsula boasts over 300 waterfalls. This trip includes a stop at two, one being the delightful Eagle River Falls. For waterfall enthusiasts, there are tips and suggestions for both long and short hikes, offering an extra adventure.
- Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary - If visiting the west coast to see giant sequoias isn’t possible, the northern equivalent can be seen on a walking trail through the Estivant Pines. The grove features pines over 300 years old, reaching heights of more than 125 feet.
- Fort Wilkins State Park - This remarkably well-preserved Army fort from 1844 is open for visits, with local history re-enactors guiding visitors. The Army built it to maintain peace between miners and Indigenous people, though there were never any significant issues.
Admission to Fort Wilkins is free, but a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Fort Wilkins State Park.
- Lake Superior - By area, Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world. The shoreline offers stunning views of volcanic rock formations and expansive skies and waters. There are numerous spots to stop for beachcombing or swimming on a warm summer day.
- Quincy Mine - Once known as Old Reliable for its continuous profitability, Quincy Mine is one of the best-preserved mines in Copper Country. Don’t miss the underground tour and the only cogwheel tram operating in the Midwest.
- The Jampot - This seasonal bakery offers boozy cakes and muffins as large as your head, along with other treats. It’s run by monks living in a beautiful monastery in the woods, surrounded by the local ingredients used in the bakery’s delights.
