Evidence of Mijas’s long history has been substantiated by archaeological discoveries near the ‘Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepcion’. This church, which was finished in the early 18th century, is built over the remnants of a Moorish fortress that existed from the 8th to the late 15th century. Before the Moors, the Romans utilized Mijas, then known as ‘Tamisa’ or ‘Jamisa’, as a significant hub for commerce and trade due to its proximity to the route that connected Malaga and Cadiz.
