- Drakolimni - We start our ascent at the village of Mikro Papigo, following a well-carved path to the mountain refuge of Astraka. Throughout the climb, we have excellent views of the Towers of Papigo and Mount Nemertsika (in Albania), among others. - Drakolimni - We start our ascent at the village of Mikro Papigo, following a well-carved path to the mountain refuge of Astraka. Throughout the climb, we have excellent views of the Towers of Papigo and Mount Nemertsika (in Albania), among others. Then we descend to the dry (in summer months) Xerolimni lake, which was formed by glaciers millions of years ago. After that, a steep hike to the lake, rewarding us with the satisfaction of climbing it, the Balkan chamois (goat-antelope) population wondering what we do at their habitat and wonderful views of the Aoos canyon and Mount Smolikas (the second-highest in Greece).

It is among the most pristine and awe-inspiring locations in all of Greece. The lake is situated at an elevation of 2,050 meters on Tymfi Mountain, within the protected area of the North Pindus Range, northwest of Gamila crest (2,497 meters), which is the highest peak of Tymfi. The surrounding landscape is bare yet striking in its unique beauty, offering a panoramic vista of the mountain summits.
