Construction likely began in 1386, during the peak of Gothic cathedral style, and it wasn’t until the latter half of the 20th century that the Fabbrica completed a comprehensive structural and conservative restoration. Situated in Milan’s heart, it measures 515 ft (157 meters) in length and 302 ft (92 meters) in width, accommodating up to 40,000 people.
