- Brera District - Brera is a neighborhood in Milan, just a 10-minute walk from the Duomo. The name originates from the medieval Italian word “braida” or “brera,” which traces back to the Lombard “brayda,” meaning “land cleared of trees.” Around the year 900, the Brera district was situated just outside Milan’s city walls. The quarter is distinctly outlined by the streets of Pontaccio, Fatebenefratelli, Dei Giardini, Monte di Pieta, Ponte Vetero, and Mercato.
This area is home to the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and the Brera Pinacoteca (an art gallery with 38 rooms), creating a Bohemian atmosphere, which is why Brera is sometimes referred to as the “Montmartre of Milan.”
- Brera District - The Academy and Pinacoteca are housed in the district’s main historical building, the Palazzo Brera, which also contains the astronomical Observatory. Nearby is Milan’s main Botanical Garden. Brera is one of the most popular areas for nightlife in Milan. Notably, Brera is a pedestrian-friendly zone: entry is permitted only for residents.
- Pinacoteca di Brera - The Pinacoteca Brera, located in a beautiful two-story Palazzo, is Milan’s most renowned art gallery. It features paintings by the most famous European and Italian masters of the 15th-17th centuries: Modigliani, Bramante, Tintoretto, even Raphael and Caravaggio. The University and the Milan Academy of Arts are also here. Stroll through the halls and observe students hurrying to classes. You can peek into workshops and classrooms.
- Chiesa Santa Maria del Carmine - The Church of Santa Maria del Carmine was constructed over two centuries, from 1268 to 1476. The Church features elements of Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque styles. In 1771, a massive fire damaged most of the Basilica. Only some parts remain intact – the Corsini Chapel and the Brancacci Chapel. The fire spared artworks such as marble sculptures by Soderini Piero and frescoes by Staggi. The Corsini Chapel was built with Baroque elements under the direction of Pier Francesco Silvana, who invited the renowned painter Giordano to paint the dome, and Giovanni Domenico to paint the ceiling in the Rococo style.
- Milan - Visit the famous and legendary bar “Jamaica.” It is a favorite gathering spot for actors, artists, and writers. The historic bar, over a hundred years old, opened in 1911 and has been adored by the public ever since. The name of this intellectual haven is linked to Alfred Hitchcock’s film “Jamaica Tavern.” The bar was frequented by world-famous celebrities, including Ernest Hemingway, who enjoyed a drink or two here. Therefore, it is a must to stop by for an aperitif or a cup of coffee in such a historic place.
- Milan - Nabucco restaurant is cherished and highly popular not only among tourists but also among locals, making it an excellent choice for those seeking quality and sophistication. The restaurant offers incredibly delicious Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, generous portions, and reasonable prices for this level of quality. The portions here are sure to satisfy everyone, and the food simply melts in your mouth. Additionally, professional service and an incredible atmosphere will make your evening unforgettable.
- Orto Botanico di Brera - The Brera Botanical Garden, located in Milan’s historic center, near the famous Palazzo Butera, which houses an art gallery, Braidense Library, Academy, and Observatory, spans about 5,000 square meters. This oasis is particularly appealing because it does not resemble a typical Botanical Garden, given its small size and the presence of trees that provide shade. Commissioned by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, who laid its foundation in 1774, the garden project was entrusted to Father Fulgenzio Whitman. Initially belonging to the Jesuits, it later underwent the removal of existing trees and the construction of a new greenhouse. Inspired by the Hortus OEconomicus typology, similar to the Collegium Theresianum in Vienna, it was designed to cultivate trees and herbs for medicinal and pharmaceutical use.
