- Colonne di San Lorenzo - Admire the majestic white columns of the Colonne di San Lorenzo, framed by the Porta Ticinese Medievale gate of brown brick. These columns, one of the few remnants of ancient Roman Mediolanum (the predecessor of Milan), were likely built by order of Emperor Maximian in the 2nd-3rd century. It is believed that the columns were part of an ancient pagan temple from the 2nd-3rd centuries, located on the site of today’s Church of Santa Maria Beltrade. They were relocated here in the 4th century. However, the truth about their origin remains uncertain.
- Basilica San Lorenzo Maggiore - A magnificent architectural marvel, intriguing both inside and out. Sixteen Corinthian columns (part of an ancient temple) stand before the Basilica. In the chapel of St. Aquilina, several late antique mosaics are preserved. The circular interior layout is quite unusual, and the large dome (the largest in Milan) leaves a lasting impression.
- Darsena - Originally constructed as a trading port in the early 17th century, Darsena is now a popular spot for both locals and tourists to relax, enjoy a meal, or have an “aperitivo” at the many restaurants and bars in the area. The place is always bustling, especially in the evenings. It’s delightful to wander along the canals, and the area is very photogenic.
- Vicolo dei Lavandai - Here, among small houses with characteristic wooden shutters, laundry was washed in special stone gutters under tiled-roof sheds until the mid-20th century. Interestingly, women were not permitted to perform this physically demanding work. The appearance of ancient laundries remains unchanged by time. The building that once housed a pharmacy and sold soap is now a themed restaurant. You can see the prototype of the first washing machine, a large centrifuge made in 1900.
- Conca di Viarenna - This lock compensates for the two-meter drop between the former Lake Sant’Eustorgio (now the Darsena dock) and the ring canal. It was used to transport marble for the construction of the Milan Cathedral from Lake Maggiore. When the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Moro’s wife Beatrice, passed away, he ordered the construction of this gateway to deliver building materials to the Milan Cathedral. For boats working on construction, passage through the lock was free. There is a booth with the Visconti coat of arms and a sign depicting the Madonna protecting the Milan Cathedral with her cloak.
- Naviglio Grande - The former transport channel with warehouses and barns has transformed into a promenade with numerous restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops (including many second-hand book and music stores). It has a unique atmosphere. Wide walkways on the sides, a shallow channel with clear water, and many cafes and restaurants create a peaceful ambiance.
