The Citadelle is often called the Eighth Wonder of the World by locals and was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. This impressive stone structure is the largest fortress in the Americas. Constructed to showcase the strength of the newly independent Haiti, the Citadelle Laferrière played a crucial role in safeguarding Haiti’s nascent state.
The fortress features an angular design, giving it a varied appearance depending on the viewer’s perspective. Some angles are strategically designed to deflect enemy cannonballs. This mountaintop stronghold includes fortification walls, extensive food and water storage, royal residences, dungeons, bathing areas, and more. Most sections of the fortress are roofless.
There are breathtaking views on three sides of rolling green peaks and, to the north, Cap-Haïtien, where vibrant shops, watch repairers, and elderly men playing dice line the streets.
