- Gournia - Located on the north coast of the Isthmus of Ierapetra in East Crete, the archaeological site of Gournia features around 50 well-preserved houses, cobbled streets, a central court, a Minoan palace, and a cemetery. It offers visitors a vivid glimpse into a Late Bronze Age (1500 B.C.) town. Gournia was a hub for producing bronze tools and weapons, domestic items, and pottery and stone vases. It was an active trade center with overseas connections to the Aegean and the Near East, and served as the palatial administrative center for the Mirabello region. Its harbor complex includes a monumental shipshed, fortification walls with towers, a riverside dam, and a cobbled street leading from the coast to the town.
- Venetian Fortress Of Kales - Situated at the entrance of the city port, the Fortress of Kales Ierapetra is the only surviving fort in the southern urban center on Crete’s south coast. Dating back to the early Venetian period of the 13th-15th century, it features rectangular fortifications. During the Turkish occupation, the fortress underwent extensive repairs, altering both its exterior and interior. Today, it stands as an archaeological site.
- Napoleon’s House - This two-story building, showcasing traditional architecture, is located in the oldest district of Ierapetra, Kato Mera. According to tradition, Napoleon Bonaparte stayed here during a brief stop in Crete on his return from Egypt. The building’s design suggests it dates back to the late 18th or early 19th century, though it may have been constructed earlier.
- The Turkish Mosque - Situated in the Kato Mera area of Ierapetra, the mosque was built in the year of Hegira 1309 (1891/1892), as indicated by inscriptions at the entrance and on the south wall. It is a square building with a wooden, four-sided roof covered with tiles. Its architecture features elements from neoclassical and eclectic styles that arrived in Crete in the late 19th century. In the mosque’s northwest corner, a minaret, now headless due to the 1953 earthquake, can be found. An Ottoman fountain, located southwest of the mosque, forms a notable complex of Ottoman architecture in Crete. The fountain, a sebil, served as a place for ritual purification before worshipers entered the mosque.
- Sarakina Gorges - According to Greek mythology, the giant Sarantapihos, son of Zeus, once stopped to drink from the river Kryos or Myrtos near Ierapetra. His long beard split the mountain in two, creating the Sarakina canyon. Sarakina is located near the traditional village of Mythi and the seaside settlement of Myrtos, where the river Kryos flows into the sea.
