Mollepata - The journey begins with a pickup from your hotel between 4:30 and 5:00 am, followed by a drive from Cusco to Mollepata, where there will be a stop for breakfast (not included). From Mollepata, a bus will take you to CHALLACANCHA (3380 meters/11,090 feet), a trip of about an hour. Afterward, a two-hour walk will lead to SORAYPAMPA (3900 meters/12,800 feet) around 1:30 pm, where the first lunch will be served and the initial camping spots will be set up. Post-lunch, a hike to HUMANTAY LAKE (4220 meters/13,845 feet) will take approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes uphill and 45 minutes downhill. Upon reaching the stunning turquoise lake and snow-capped Humantay mountain, there will be ample time for photos and a guide will provide explanations. The day concludes with a return to the campsite for tea, dinner, and a restful night in huts.
Soraypampa - Abra Salkantay - Chaullay
Humantay Lake - The day starts with a hearty breakfast before embarking on a long trek. With the sun’s blessing, the majestic snow-covered Salkantay mountain will be visible. Gradually ascending, a short rest will be taken at Soyrococha to catch your breath. The trek continues upward to the highest point of Salcantay mountain at 4600 meters/15,090 feet, where the guide will share insights about the mountain’s history and the Inca civilization, providing a perfect opportunity for a snack break. Afterward, the descent begins, taking about 2 hours to reach a small house for a delicious lunch and some tea or coffee. The journey continues downhill to the second campsite at Chaullay.
Chaullay - Hidroelectrica - Aguas Calientes
Aguas Calientes - This day involves a more relaxed trek, mostly downhill for about 4 hours until reaching LA PLAYA SAYHUAYACO for lunch. The climate becomes noticeably warmer as the trek enters the high jungle, known as (ceja de selva). This area is rich with small plantations of coffee beans, coca, and bananas. If fortunate, the “gallito de las rocas” (cock of the rocks), Peru’s national bird, may be spotted. After lunch, a local bus ride of about 2 hours will lead to HIDROLECTRICA, from where a 3-hour walk along the railroad will take you to AGUAS CALIENTES, arriving at the hostel around 5 to 6 pm.
Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco
Machu Picchu - The much-anticipated day begins early with a hearty breakfast, followed by a walk of about 1 hour and 30 minutes or a 30-minute bus ride to the MACHU PICCHU CITADEL. Upon arrival, a guided tour of MACHU PICCHU will be conducted. This mysterious city will be explored for approximately 2 hours, with the guide providing archaeological insights and explaining how MACHU PICCHU is divided into three sectors: agricultural, residential, and religious.
After the tour, those who have pre-booked an additional hike up HUAYNA PICCHU or MACHU PICCHU mountain will have time to enjoy the breathtaking views independently. Subsequently, a return to Aguas Calientes will follow, where the return train to Ollantaytambo and then a bus back to Cusco awaits, or alternatively, a walk back to HIDROLECTRICA to catch the bus back to Cusco, which takes approximately 7 hours.
