Casa Salkantay Museo Restaurant - The adventure begins with a 5:00 a.m. pick-up from the hotel in Cusco, followed by a transfer in a tourist vehicle to Mollepata. Here, the team that will accompany the hike is introduced. Please note that breakfast is not included.
Next, the journey proceeds to Marqoq’asa, the starting point of the hike to the viewpoint, offering views of both the Mollepata Valley and the Marqoq’asa Valley. The hike continues to Soraypampa, where a well-deserved lunch awaits.
The group will then ascend for about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach Humantay Lagoon, situated at 4,220 meters above sea level. After taking in the beauty of this location, the descent back to Soraypampa begins.
Camp from Suyroccocha to Challway (Chaullay)
Salkantay Trail - After a refreshing wake-up, a hot cup of coca tea is served in the tent to help with the chilly morning. All equipment is prepared to start this wonderful day of trekking towards the Salkantay Pass, experiencing both the cloud forest and the subtropical forest en route.
This second day presents more challenging hiking than the first. As the summit is approached, the effort is rewarded with even more stunning views. After reaching the top, the trail descends continuously over rocky terrain, leading into a more accessible tropical forest area at the base of Salkantay Mountain.
Challway to the “Playa” camp
Salkantay Trail - In the morning, a beautiful mountainous landscape is enjoyed as the trail continues along a lush green path towards La Playa. Along the way, several rivers, tributaries of the main river of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the Urubamba River, are encountered. For much of the route, the path follows the white waters flowing from Salkantay Mountain.
During the hike, wild strawberries may be found along both sides of the trail (depending on the season), along with a wide variety of flora and fauna, including wildflowers, orchids, birds, passion fruits, avocados, coffee plantations, bananas, pineapples, and more.
The hike lasts approximately 5 hours, with the campsite located in the settlement of La Playa.
Llactapata - Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu)
Hot Springs (Aguas Calientes) - Departure from La Playa is very early in the morning to avoid the intense humidity and heat, beginning a short trek towards the final pass of the journey. Today, part of the original Inca Trail from Lucmabamba to Llactapata Pass is followed, crossing the Santa Teresa Valley and enjoying a variety of landscapes, including lush green scenery and a serene Inca trail.
Upon reaching the Llactapata ruins, the first distant view of Machu Picchu is revealed, along with breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding Andes Mountains. The Llactapata archaeological site is also explored.
Afterward, the descent through dense forests of bamboo and coffee in the Aobamba Valley begins, following a trail down to Hydroelectric (approximately two hours of steep descent to the riverbank). From the Aobamba River, the route to Hydroelectric becomes easier, continuing on foot towards the town of Aguas Calientes. During the final two and a half hours, the path follows the train tracks.
Machu Picchu
Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu - Very early in the morning, the bus is taken up to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, entrance tickets are presented, and a guided tour of the citadel begins, lasting approximately 2 hours. After the tour, the group returns to the town of Aguas Calientes for lunch.
Finally, the journey continues to the train station to board the train to Ollantaytambo, followed by a bus transfer back to the hotel in Cusco.
