The fort has a rich history of conflicts among various parties in Mombasa. It was besieged by Omani Arabs from 1696 to 1698. Between 1837 and 1895, it served as barracks for soldiers. When the British protectorate was declared on July 1, 1895, the fort was transformed into a prison. Today, it stands as a significant historical landmark in the East African region.

In the afternoon, explore Dr. Rene Haller’s Nature Park (Haller Park), which was once quarries and is now reforested and home to numerous animals. Haller Park hosts a variety of wildlife, including hippos, giraffes, buffalos, antelopes, crocodiles, as well as smaller mammals and birds. The park features a Game Sanctuary, Reptile Park, a small demonstration Fish Farm area, Palm Garden, Crocodile Pens, and a Giraffe viewing platform, offering diverse attractions to educate and entertain the over 160,000 visitors who come each year.
